Huntington School Board Notes

Huntington School Board members have approved long-term substitute teacher appointments for Robert Barca (Finley/social studies) and Kasey MacPherson (Southdown/speech therapist). Trustees took the action at their meeting on Monday, October 24. Mr. Barca will work through approximately December 8. Ms. MacPherson will work through approximately December 13.

Trustees granted a leave of absence to Huntington High School security guard Tina Cantalupo through November 9 and authorized teachers Nicole Lynch (Woodhull/music), Gina Colica (Huntington High School/English) and Jacqueline Waltel-Plesent (Flower Hill-Southdown/art) to return from leaves of absence effective January 30, 2012.

Katie McCourt was appointed as a special education coordinator with a stipend of $7,840. Woodhull School teachers Keith Meyers and Allison VonVange were appointed as faculty advisors for the sixth grade Greenkill Outdoor Education Center trip. They will be paid stipends of $1,250.

Angela Berner, Donna O'Shaughnessy, Nancy Giorgos, Vivian Joseph, Karen Melara, Debra Ravo, Megan Bennett, Soraya Triessl and Lucy Marotta were approved to work as instructors in the Saturday Academy program for English language learners. They will be paid $48.97 per hour. Miryam Palacio was hired to work as a teacher aide in the program. She will be paid $19.99. The stipends are covered by a Title III grant.

Trustees also took the following actions:

• Approved a budget transfer from one code to another in the amount of $10,000 to provide for ongoing curriculum mapping and writing in preparation for full implementation of the common core state standards in ELA/literacy and math.

• Approved a memorandum of agreement with the Associated Teachers of Huntington stipulating that the Woodhull School computer club faculty advisor position that carries a stipend of $912 will not be filled this year. The position will be replaced by a scenery and stage crew club advisor position with a stipend of $750. The MOA is effective through June 30, 2012.

• Approved a supplemental educational services contract with Smarties Tutoring Services LLC for services in the areas of English language arts, reading and math. The company will be paid $54.50 per student/per hour.

• Voted 4-2 (Adam Spector and John P. Paci III dissenting and Elizabeth Black absent) to allow the Helping Hand Rescue Mission to use the Jack Abrams School auditorium for its 47th annual children's Christmas party on December 17. Two toys and Christmas candy will be distributed to each participating child at the end of the party.

• Approved a supplemental educational services contract with Infinite Learning, Inc. for services in the areas of English language arts, reading and math. The company will earn $60 per student/per hour.

• Authorized William Harris and Louis D. Giani, Sr. to work as athletic supervisors at sports events. They will be paid $31.70 per hour when they work.

• Authorized William Jackson to work as a home tutor at a rate of pay of $48.97 per hour.

• Approved a supplemental educational services contract with A-Totleys Learning Center for services in the areas of English language arts, reading and math. The company will earn $60 per student/per hour.

• Approved Rae Montesano to provide professional development classes at the rate of pay of $66 per hour.

• Approved Huntington High School student Frank Yeh to work as a science lab assistant at the rate of pay of $7.25 per hour.

• Approved a supplemental education services contract with Kings Kids Resource, Inc. for services in the areas of English language arts, reading and math. The company will be paid $55 per student/per hour or $50 per student/per hour for groups of 3-5 students.

• Authorized Caitlin Bishop, Michael Fabio, Christina Gottlieb, Sanford Hirsch, Kristin Kieran, Jacqueline Kohan, Maria Oliva, Carlos Pumar, Joann Whitcher, Melinda Sarabia, Conrad Dierking, Priya Mondkar, Kathryn Joseph and Kasey MacPherson to work as substitute teachers. They will be paid $90 per diem.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Child Center for Developmental Services, Inc. for pediatric neuro-developmental evaluations. The company will be paid $600 per evaluation and report.

• Accepted a donation from Mr. and Mrs. McGuinness, parents of a Huntington High School staff member. The couple donated a drawing table for use in the high school art program. The table is valued at $200.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Keith Harris, MD for child and adolescent psychiatric evaluations at a rate of $775 per evaluation and report.

• Authorized teachers Megan Himmelman and Leslie Pond and speech therapist Kristen Murphy to reimburse mileage reimbursement for district related travel between buildings.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Frantz Moise, MD for adolescent psychiatric evaluations at a rate of $800 per evaluation and report.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Howard Reiser, MD for neurological evaluations at a rate of $250 per evaluation and report.

• Approved a transportation contract with Eastern Suffolk BOCES related to field trip transportation. The total anticipated annual cost listed in the contract is $30,000.

• Approved the retention of White Plains based law firm Keane & Beane, P.C. to represent the district in a dual enrollment matter. The hourly rate for the legal services will be $240 per hour.

• Approved a supplemental educational services contract with Opportunities Industrialization Center of Suffolk, Inc. OIC will provide supplemental services in English language arts (including reading) and math at a rate of $60 per student/per hour for 19 hours.

• Authorized Matthew Metz and Ovido Umana to work as substitute custodians at the rate of pay of $10.50 per hour.

• Authorized Daniel Greco and Ronald Anderson to work as substitute food service workers at the rate of pay of $9 per hour.

• Approved a supplemental educational services contract with Huntington Learning Centers, Inc., which will provide services in the areas of English language arts, reading and math at the rate of $37.63 per student/per hour.

• Authorized Vanessa Gurrieri to work as a substitute clerical worker at the rate of pay of $10.50 per hour.

• Accepted a donation of a weeping cheery tree from Bill Ahern of Ahern's Landscaping in Huntington Station. The tree is valued at $575. It will be used as part of a memorial to the Huntington High School Class of 1961.

• Approved a supplemental educational services contract with All About Kids for services in the area of English language arts, reading and math. The company will be paid $56.45 per student/per hour for 20 hours.

• Authorized Patricia Gaspari to work as a substitute teacher aide at the rate of pay of $9 per hour.

• Approved volunteers Michael Marchena, Lindsey Whiffen, Noel Borden and Joan Borden to travel with the Blue Devil marching band to Syracuse for the state championship. The volunteers were slated to help with rehearsals and performances.
