Senior, Senior Prom Draws
Crowd at HHS
They came dressed in their "good" clothes and most even had a little spring in their step. A crowd of 148 local senior citizens turned out for this year's Senior, Senior Prom at Huntington High School and spent a few hours having nothing but pure fun.
Huntington's Interacting Grand Friends club hosted the 18th annual prom and the group really went out of its way to insure everyone had an enjoyable time. The seniors dined on a sumptuous traditional Italian dinner along with a variety of handmade desserts. Naturally, there was plenty of dancing, too,
The high school students and the senior citizens got along famously, talking, joking and generally enjoying one another's company. Tradition was shattered when not one set, but two sets of prom kings and queens were selected.
"This year we have 28 very active Grand Friends who raised funds for this event by making presentations to local businesses," said teacher Suzie Biagi who serves as the club's faculty advisor along with retired library media specialist Camille DeCanio.
The club landed two grants to fund its operations this year, including one from Astoria Federal Savings and another from the Huntington Rotary Club. Students also baked and sold the goods after school throughout the year.
Once again teacher Anthony Troffa assumed the role of DJ, presenting an eclectic collection of music that kept the crowd entertained. Those in attendance ranged in age from nine to 96 years old.
"Camille and I are so proud of our kids this year," Mrs. Biagi said. "They worked so hard at putting this event together, as well as fund raising for every dollar. Everyone had a fabulous time."
The afternoon included two homegrown crooners singing their renditions of Frank Sinatra's 'I Did It My Way' and 'New York, New York' and special guest magician, Huntington senior Conner Davis making the rounds.
"We could not have asked for a nicer and more successful affair," Mrs. Biagi said. "We've already asked for a second microphone for next year for our self-proclaimed crooners."
Next year's prom is set for May 4, 2012. For more information, contact Mrs. Biagi at sibiagi@hufsd.edu.
