Huntington School Board Notes

Huntington School Board members accepted the resignations of two teachers during Monday night's meeting. Huntington High School English teacher Roy Dumar is resigning effective June 30 and moving upstate with his family. He will continue his teaching career there. Woodhull Intermediate School music teacher Josephine Llorente is resigning her position effective June 24. She will be attending graduate school.

Trustees granted leaves of absence to Washington Primary School teacher Adrienne DiMaggio (March 25 to June 24) and high school teacher aide Marilyn Strickland (February 4 to May 17). Woodhull special education teacher Allison Curtin was approved to return from a child care related leave of absence, effective March 16.

Trustees also approved long-term substitute teacher appointments for Beth Minoff (Washington School/special education/March 8 to June 24 – approximately), Denise Novello (Washington School/classroom/October 28 to June 24) and Dana Aboulafia (J. Taylor Finley Middle School/speech therapist/March 28 – to a date to be determined.)

Trustees also took the following actions:

• Approved the addition of Dana Aboulafia, Rui Correia, Jennifer Queen and Marissa Signorelli to the district's substitute teacher list. They will be paid $90 per diem when their services are required.

• Approved the addition of clerical worker Joan Esposito, security guard Glenn Deveau, teacher aide Peter Palacio and food service workers Heather Christy and Araceli Espinal to list of approved substitutes. They will cover employee absences as needed.

• Approved a change of assignment for Olga Velazquez from a five hour aide at Flower Hill Primary School to a four hour aide at the high school.

• Approved four days of extra work for SEARCH program teacher Christina Gottlieb.

• Appointed teacher Nancy Giorgos to the staff of the after school ELA/Math test prep program at Washington School.

• Approved post-season payments to girls' basketball coaches Mike Kaplan and James McCabe, boys' swimming coach Gil Smith, boys' track and field coach Ron Wilson, girls' track and field coach Debra Cheskes and wrestling coaches Kieran Mock, Travis Smith, Lou D. Giani, Sr. and Peter Fusco.

• Approved 1.5 hours of work for teachers Ivona Catanzaro, Lauren Frisenda, Alexandra O'Leary, Lisa Sullivan, Maria Acevedo and Justine Triola and up to 32 other teachers associated with the Saturday Academy orientation. (Teacher Brian Hansen was authorized for two hours.) The teachers will be paid $48.97 per hour.

• Approved additional work as piano accompanists for music teachers Nicole Lynch and Veronica Mainville. They will earn $24 per hour.

• Appointed Claudia Gonzalez-Butler as a substitute teacher in the district's Saturday Academy program. She will earn $48.97 per hour when she works.

• Appointed teacher David Benjamin as a mentor in the district's new teacher mentoring program. He will earn $187.50.

• Authorized teachers Donna Nugent (two hours) and Anna Fabela (1.5 hours) to provide Regents review classes. They will be paid $48.97 per hour.

• Authorized Angela Berner to provide professional development classes to teachers on ELA assessments. She will be paid $48.97 per hour for four hours of work.

• Approved contracts with the Little Flower School District in Wading River and Developmental Disabilities Institute based in Smithtown and an addendum to a contract with South Oaks Hospital in Amityville.

• Awarded a request for proposal to Huntington Coach/Roy K. Davis Bus Company for summer bus transportation.

• Authorized the district's participation in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES cooperative bid system. "This provides the district with the availability to join in any cooperative bid that Eastern Suffolk BOCES produces," said David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services.

• Approved a change order related to the construction of modular classrooms at Woodhull School. "During the construction of the classrooms, the fire marshal requested, on his inspection, that the school district add additional horns and strobes to the fire alarm system," Mr. Grackin said. A change order in the amount of $1,754.56 was generated by Locust Valley Electric, the company that performed the work.

• Awarded a bid to the Carrier Corporation in the amount of $14,750 for a HVAC unit that will be placed on the Huntington High School roof.

• Authorized the disposal of a leg press machine at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.

• Approved two budget transfers to cover the cost of two teachers attending training sessions for a new AP Italian course ($200) and additional Regents preparation sessions at the high school ($2,500).

• Approved the Long Island Squids' facility use request. The team plays in the American Lacrosse League. It will use the Huntington High School field to host home games during March – May. Games are played at 2 p.m. Leyland Davis, a 2001 Huntington High School alum, plays for and manages the Squids.
