Ally Kiley Captures Greenlawn Fire Department Scholarship

Alexandra Kiley is tops with her classmates and the Greenlawn Fire Department feels the same way. The Huntington High School senior was presented with a $1,000 scholarship by the GFD during Huntington's academic awards night earlier this month.

Ms. Kiley is Huntington's G.O. president. She's headed to Harvard College in the fall and has built an impressive resume over the past four years. From raising money to help support St. Hugh of Lincoln Church's food pantry and volunteering with the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative to participating in the annual breast cancer walk to raise monies and awareness and having her hand in dozens of student council activities around the high school, Ms. Kiley is a veritable dynamo.

"The Greenlawn Fire Department has been serving this community for over 100 years," Lt. Nill told an awards night crowd of about 300. "Last year we answered just shy of 2,000 alarms. It seems that every year the number of alarms is increasing, but somehow we always manage to help those in need. Whether it is a fire alarm, a call in the middle of the night for a person who is sick or for an injury at a sporting event, someone from a volunteer organization is always there."

Ms. Kiley, who is widely known as Ally, is an exceptional volunteer herself, always ready, willing and able to pitch in and help out, whether it's a school related initiative or a classmate or friend in need. Teachers, including student council faculty advisors Fred Bisgono and Anthony Troffa can't say enough good things about the senior.

"Keep in mind that all of the members of the Greenlawn Fire Department, as well as Huntington Community First Aid Squad, Huntington Fire Department and Huntington Manor Fire Department are volunteers," Lt. Nill said. "Many of us give up our time with family and friends so that we may help those who are in need."

It's not hard to understand how Ms. Kiley, whose service to others often flies slightly under the radar, was tapped for the scholarship. "Ally is an incredibly impressive young woman," Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said. "Harvard is gaining one of the very best seniors in the country."
