Math Olympiad Sixth Graders Honored

These kids are really good at numbers. One of Woodhull School's sixth grade Math Olympiad teams earned top honors in this year's worldwide competition, which drew more than 150,000 participants.

Justin Knowles led the way, scoring in the top two percent and earning a gold pin and trophy. Teammates Kevin Gulizio, Miranda Nykolyn, Steve Yeh, Anthony Emmanuele, Logan Rice, Jacob Strieb, Cloe Stevens, Bradley Landberg and Christopher Burton scored in the top ten percent and received silver pins.

A second Woodhull Math Olympiad team produced three additional silver pin winners with Jack Glicker, Nicholas Lanzisero and Michelle D'Alessandro earning honors

Woodhull's top team was recognized with a handsome plaque that will be put on display at the school. Each of the team members participates in the Huntington School District's weekly Math Olympiad program, which falls under the SEARCH (Scholastic Enrichment and Resource for the Children in Huntington) umbrella of enrichment programs.

Students qualify for Math Olympiad program participation as a result of their respective performance on the annual fourth and fifth grade math assessments. Annual cut-off scores vary. Maryann Daly, SEARCH program chairperson and district Math Olympiad coach, will announce (on the SEARCH e-board) the qualifying cut-off scores for the 2011/12 school year in September.
