Blood Drive Seeks out
Staff and Community
With the need for blood and blood products more pressing than ever, the Huntington School District plans to do its part on Tuesday, February 1 when it holds its annual blood drive at Jack Abrams School from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Staff members and community residents are encouraged to participate.
The drive's timing is crucial according to Vicki Mingin, Huntington's executive director of special education and student support services, who is helping to coordinate the event with Woodhull School nurse Liz Scannello.
Long Island Blood Services is staffing the drive, which features extended hours beyond the end of the normal school day in an effort to give dozens of additional opportunities to those willing to donate.
"Having sufficient blood supply available can only happen with continued blood drives such as the one our district is holding," Dr. Mingin said. Organizers said that many people don't realize one pint of blood can assist up to six other individuals in need.
"By giving blood, you are doing something that will help other people, and at the same time feel good about yourself," Dr. Mingin said. Visit www.nybloodcenter.org for more information. A person can donate blood every 56 days or up to six times per year.
Those donating blood must bring a photo ID along with their Social Security number. To schedule a specific appointment time call Mrs. Scanello at 673-2030. Specific appointments help eliminate long waits.
Questions regarding medical eligibility for blood donations should be directed to Sue Sandler of Long Island Blood Services at (516) 478-5012 or Mrs. Scannello.
