The Huntington wrestling team improved its league record to 2-1 with a 60-13 victory over visiting Deer Park. Seventh grader John Arceri (96 lbs.) earned a pin in 1:10. Eighth grader Brandon Mendez (103 lbs.) followed with another pin in 2:46 and eighth grader Carlos Viera-Pereira (112 lbs.) battled through to a 10-8 decision. Corey Jamison (119 lbs.) kept the momentum going with a pin in 1:17 and Nigel McNeil (125 lbs.) made it four pins in five matches when he decked his opponent in 2:38.
T.J. Wilson (152 lbs. – 3:20), Luis Mendez (160 lbs. – 3:01), Duncan Murchison (189 lbs. – 0:36) and Anthony Puca (285 lbs. – 0:54) also locked down pins. Kenny Stropoli (145 lbs.) grabbed a 6-0 decision. State runner-up Louis Puca (171 lbs.) fought to a satisfying 11-6 verdict. Nick Lupi (215 lbs.) captured a 5-1 decision.
The victory gives Huntington an overall dual meet record of 7-1 this winter.
Askerberg is Perfect
The Huntington girls' fencing team topped host Commack, 15-12. Carly Glowacky captured the bout in epee, 5-4. Maggie Askerberg went a perfect 3-0 in foil as the Blue Devils improved to 5-2.
Blue Devils Matmen Nipped
The Huntington wrestling team was nipped by Islip, 35-34 in a rescheduled meet held at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. The two teams finished the competition in a 34-34 tie, but Islip was awarded a tiebreaker point after having won 8-of-15 individual bouts.
Corey Jamison, Duncan Murchison and Anthony Puca grabbed decisions for Huntington. Nigel McNeil, Kevin Mendez, Louis Puca and Nick Lupi pinned their foes. McNeil's fall came in just 25 seconds.
Fencers Compete in MA
The Huntington fencing team recently competed in the Concord Carlisle High School Invitational in Massachusetts. The Blue Devils more than held their own against many tough opponents.
Seniors John Ferraiolo and Olivia Weller won championships in epee. Sophomore Jimmy Ferraiolo was sixth in men's epee. Sophomore Maggie Askerberg and Junior Alexandra Martinolich finished third and fourth, respectively, in women's foil. Sophomore Katia DeSimone was fourth in women's sabre. Sophomore Carly Glowacky finished second in women's epee.
Blue Devils Struggled for Footing
The Huntington boys' basketball team struggled to gain its footing early in its game against visiting Deer Park. The Blue Devils trailed 17-8 after one quarter.
Huntington battled to within four points several times, but trailed at halftime, 36-25. The Blue Devils never could make up their deficit in the second half, losing 64-49.
John Patron led all Huntington scorers with 22 points. Javon Robinson added 15 points. P.J. White (six points), Jack Cutrone (four points) and JT Taylor (two points) also scored for the Blue Devils.
Weller's Day to Shine
Olivia Weller was untouchable all afternoon, going 3-0 in epee to pace the Huntington girls' fencing team to a big 21-6 victory over visiting Walt Whitman.
The Blue Devils bested Newfield the same day, 16-11. In that meet, Marie Clifford captured the deciding foil bout, 5-0 to lead Huntington to another league win.
Comeback Falls Short
The Huntington girls' basketball team got off to a slow start at Deer Park, trailing 11-2 after the first eight minutes of play. The Blue Devils picked up the pace in the second frame, but still found themselves behind at halftime, 21-12.
Rookie head coach Mike Kaplan must have inspired his team during the intermission because the Blue Devils went on a 26-21 run the rest of the way, but fell just a little bit short at the final buzzer, 42-38.
Seniors Emma Hayes-Hurley and Jackie Waldron dropped in 12 points each. Heather Forster scored six points and Courtney O'Bryan added four. Shea Scully and Colleen Wright also had two points apiece.
Swimmers Lose Close Meet
The Huntington boys' swimming and diving team lost a close meet to Ward Melville, 96-92. However, several individual Blue Devil swimmers notched personal best times. Standout performances were turned in by Marlon Nigron in the 500 freestyle, Tom Scott in the 200 individual medley and Todd Colvin in the 100 butterfuly.
Hughes and Ceide Star
Co-captains Emma Hughes and Joellenn Ceide scored 14 points each to lead the Huntington junior varsity girls' basketball team over Half Hollow Hills West, 40-18.
