Arts-in-Ed Partners with
John Engeman Theater

Faced with a loss of funding in next year's school budget, the Huntington School District's arts-in-education program is looking to a new fundraising partnership with the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport.

The theater, which is located at 250 Main Street, offers Broadway quality shows that have earned rave reviews. The OOMPAH (Organization of Music Parents of Huntington) AIE fundraising program will provide participants with a $5 per ticket discount. The Engeman Theater will give the AIE program a donation in the amount of $10 for each ticket bought using the special promotional code "HAIE." Tickets can be ordered in person at the box office, via telephone or online.

The promotional offer is good for all performances except those on Friday and Saturday evenings. Complimentary valet parking is available.

Upcoming productions include "Guys and Dolls" (April 14-June 19), "Hairspray" (July 7-August 28), "Camelot" (September 15-November 6), "The Music Man" (November 25-January 15, 2012), "The Sunshine Boys" (February 2-March 25, 2012) and "42nd Street" (April 12-June 17, 2012).

"You do not have to be associated with the Huntington School District or OOMPAH to use the code," said Joan R. Fretz, Huntington's district director of fine and performing arts. "This is a great thing."

Despite the loss of district funding, the AIE "committee is still motivated and excited to keep going, raise money and provide whatever programs we can afford," Ms. Fretz said.

Huntington's AIE committee presents programs designed to enhance the study of literature, humanities, mathematics, science, fine and performing arts, health and character education. Students are provided with opportunities to visit and learn about the unique historical sites throughout Huntington. There is a special emphasis on providing programs for single grade levels that connect with specific curriculum objectives.

AIE committee members are local parent volunteers. Ms. Fretz advises and helps coordinate the committee.

The AIE committee researches and plans cultural arts and exploratory programs linked directly to core curriculum for every grade level. In recent years students have participated in a wide range of experiences from seeing their own pieces of creative writing performed by professional actors and chatting with famous authors to working with real scientists and "meeting" characters from American history.
