Mock is Indispensable at Cornell
Steve Mock came out of nowhere to capture the hearts of Cornell University men's lacrosse fans this past spring. Now the 5'9, 165 lb. former Huntington Blue Devil star is one of the top returning players for the Big Red, which reached the NCAA Division I semi-finals last May.
Cornell compiled a 12-6 record, including a 12-7 loss to Notre Dame in the semi-finals of the national championship tournament. After not playing in the Big Red's first three games, Mock finally appeared in the fourth contest against Binghamton, tallying one goal and one assist.
Mock, who is a sophomore this fall, then sat out the next game against Virginia, before coming off the bench in the fifth game of the year against Yale and again scoring a goal and adding an assist. He came off the bench again against Stony Brook and contributed two goals and an assist.
By the end of the year, Mock had played in 13 games, starting two of them, scored 21 goals and added two assists. He was third on the team in goals and fourth in points with 23.
The Blue Devil great was so good in the post-season that he landed on the Ivy League All-Tournament team and the NCAA All-Tournament team. Mock, a 2009 Huntington graduate, scored three goals in the NCAA semi-finals against Notre Dame and picked up five ground balls.
In three years on the Huntington varsity lacrosse squad, Mock scored 123 goals and notched 61 assists. He was named All-Division three times, All-County twice and was an honorable mention All-American.
As a sophomore, Mock contributed 47 goals and 17 assists. He scored 38 goals and had 24 assists as a junior. In his senior year he found the back of the net 38 times and added 20 assists. His 184 points put him among the best Huntington players ever.
Now, all of a sudden, the player who received no real mention in Cornell's team guide last spring is being touted as a legitimate All-American prospect in his sophomore year.
