Paul Rispoli's the Consummate Professional

Paul Rispoli is a very likeable fellow. He's a good conversationalist and funny, too. He's also regarded as a fine worker. He knows his job and all its many facets inside-out and has the ability to remain calm and collected in the face of crisis and even catastrophe.

As the Huntington School District's director of facilities since 1998, Mr. Rispoli has been tireless in his drive to professionalize his department's operations. He has high standards for the employees he supervises and a keen eye for the maintenance and repair needs of the district's eight buildings.

On any given work day, Mr. Rispoli is on the job in Huntington at 5 a.m. He visits several buildings daily to inspect their interiors and grounds and he routinely speaks not only with the custodians and outdoor groundskeepers but teachers and principals.

"It's a hands-on job," Mr. Rispoli said about his position. "There are high expectations from everyone in the district, including teachers, administrators, coaches and club advisors. Many community groups using our facilities are also very demanding. We work hard to keep everyone happy. We want all of the buildings to shine."

Mr. Rispoli came to the district in 1977. He has moved up the ladder by serving as a custodian, groundskeeper, chief custodian and maintenance supervisor. Over the years, he earned certificates in construction management from the University of Wisconsin, turf and athletic field management from Cornell University and as an asbestos inspector and management planner.

"Paul's a great guy and a real pleasure to work with," Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said. "He works well with everyone and is a very loyal and dedicated employee. He's done a fine job for the community."

The buildings and grounds department is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of all eight school buildings, the coordination of the use of district facilities by school and community groups and health and safety issues. Mr. Rispoli also serves as Huntington's asbestos compliance officer and has overseen millions of dollars in construction, renovation and repair projects.

In his efforts to keep the district's facilities in good shape, Mr. Rispoli works closely with David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services. The two have formed an unbeatable team and have worked hard to maximize every tax dollar devoted to maintenance.

"Mr. Rispoli works tirelessly to make certain that the facilities are safe and appropriate for both students and staff," Mr. Grackin said.

Mr. Rispoli enjoys visiting the eight buildings in the district, walking the grounds and interacting with those he comes in contact with. He's known for promptly addressing issues as they are brought to his attention. He's unflappable, even when faced with floods, fires and vandalism.

"We are in an age where we are being asked to do more with less," Mr. Rispoli said. "Budgets are very tight. Everyone in the department works hard to get their jobs done and to keep our facilities in good shape. By staying on top of maintenance and repair issues, we are saving district taxpayers money in the long run."

In addition to his work in the district, Mr. Rispoli sits on the board of directors of the Long Island Region of the Empire State Games and attends many Blue Devil sporting events.
