Alex Lau Heads
Back to Georgetown

As Alex Lau prepares to head back to Georgetown University for his sophomore year, the Huntington High School Class of 2009 member is remarkably well-focused and determined.
Far from being a timid first year student, Mr. Lau made his presence felt on Georgetown's campus. "My freshman year finished up great," he said early one recent morning. He is doing well academically and seems to have found the perfect fit to develop his other considerable talents.
The spring semester saw the Huntington grad put his beloved rugby activities on hold while he launched a bi-weekly sports column in The Hoya, the university's newspaper. The column, dubbed "What's For Dinner?" tackles issues in the sports world that typically fly just below the radar.
"From there, I developed my own sports blog," Mr. Lau said. The blog can be found at alexlauwhatsfordinner.blogspot.com. "It started out with the same idea as the column, but since I was writing more frequently (about five times a week), I began writing about the hot topics in sports, as well as about New York and Georgetown sports." He even posted a piece on recent changes that have occurred in the Huntington School District.
Since arriving back home in Huntington late this past spring, Mr. Lau has been busy. "During the summer, I worked at my mom's law firm, Brosnan & Hegler part-time, setting up and organizing the filing system there, as well as doing some paralegal work, and wrote for my blog five times a week," the Huntington alum said.
Mr. Lau said he's "excited to head back to Georgetown and DC and get back into the swing of things." He plans on rejoining the rugby team. It's served as a pseudo-fraternity for him. He also intends to continue writing for his blog and for the school newspaper.
Although he can't officially declare a major until his sophomore year concludes, Mr. Lau is on his way to a double major in government and history and a minor in either English or economics. He hopes to attend law school in the future. That wouldn't come as a surprise to the Huntington teachers that have always been impressed with Mr. Lau's intelligence, work ethic and ability to express his opinions.
"One thing I've regretted so far is not doing enough community service," Mr. Lau said about his first year of college. "The reputation for community service that Georgetown has is one of the reasons I came to the school, and I'm sad to say that I haven't gotten very involved so far. Last year, it was because I wanted to keep my schedule as open as possible in order to focus on my classes, but now that I've adjusted to college life, I feel that it's time to get involved in the community."
Mr. Lau is known to absorb a great deal of information, whether through class lectures, readings or personal experiences. He processes it, reflects upon it and often acts upon it. His mind is always at work.
"If there's one thing I learned from the first year, it's that college goes by fast, and so I really want to get involved this year, so that I don't miss out," he said.
