Finley Honor Society Stays Active
The top students at J. Taylor Finley Middle School are making this year's honor society one of the best ever. The group has been extremely active and has tackled a number of initiatives in the first three months of the school year.
Teachers Amy Hughes and Phyllis Sadusky are the honor society's energetic faculty advisors. The pair is pleased with the early enthusiasm of this year's members and the willingness of the scholars to pitch-in and get involved.
Finley Principal John Amato said the existence of the National Junior Honor Society chapter at the school "is a way to formally celebrate our highest achieving students. We develop their skills in volunteerism, scholarship and character so they can apply to the National Honor Society in high school. Our spring induction is a great event."
During meet-the-teacher night in September, honor society members served as guides. Stationed throughout the building, the students helped direct parents into classrooms and gave directions to those who found themselves hopelessly lost.
In October the honor society members participated in American Cancer Society's annual breast cancer march at Jones Beach State Park. The Finley students raised over $300 that day for the cause of research and increased awareness.
The honor society collected more than 140 lbs. of leftover Halloween candy from Nov. 1-5 and donated it to Huntington Bay Dental. (Finley did not accept the $1 per pound bonus that was offered by the dental office.) Huntington Bay Dental is sending the candy to the Cpl. Chris Scherer Foundation. That organization is sending it to U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Next month the Finley honor society will be collecting new toys. "They will be donated to Toys of Hope (located at 167 E. 2nd Street, Huntington Station)," Mrs. Sadusky said. "The toys will be given to needy families across Long Island." (Visit www.toysofhope.org for more information.)
Finley honor society members are also serving as peer mentors and peer tutors during and even after school each day throughout the year.
