Finley's New Friends of the Earth Club

There's a new club at J. Taylor Finley Middle School that focuses on environmental awareness and recycling. The group has been meeting and planning a set of ambitious initiatives.
The Friends of the Earth club appears poised to become an extremely active organization in the building. "Finley has been recycling paper for several years, but we will be expanding to recycle aluminum cans and plastic bottles," said Cathy Cain, a guidance counselor at the school who is a faculty advisor to the club along with special education teacher Erica Murphy.
"The students in the club work hard to educate the Finley community about the benefits of recycling," Mrs. Cain said. Every Friday, club members make public service announcements containing interesting information about environmental issues.
"The club is in the process of making recycled, earth friendly, staff appreciation day gifts," Mrs. Cain said. "Our biggest project of the year will be a holiday card collection drive. We are going to be reaching out to the Huntington school community to help us recycle holiday greeting cards that we will be sending to Saint Jude's Children's hospital."
Mrs. Cain said the holiday cards will be collected and ultimately cut and formatted for reuse "by the folks at the hospital." For more information contact Mrs. Cain at ccain@hufsd.edu.
