Blue Ribbons of Excellence Awarded at Art Show
More than two thousand visitors explored last week’s Huntington School District art show, with most expressing surprise the work was produced by students ranging in age from five to 18. The pieces on display covered just about every type of art. The exhibit was so extensive that special maps were printed to help residents navigate their way around the floor.
The annual event is timed to coincide with the district’s budget vote and trustee election. Voters were encouraged to walk down the high school’s main hallway from the lobby to the gym, where thousands of works awaited visitors.
“I was thrilled to share the incredible work of our art program with the public at our annual art show,” said Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts. “It’s such an exciting way for our residents to see the development of our student artists from kindergarten through high school. Each project demonstrated the way our students are using what they are learning about the elements of art and principles of design.”
Last Tuesday there were two video and fashion shows, which were enjoyed by standing room only crowds of about 400 in the afternoon and 600 in the evening. “The energy that was generated by the fashion students showing off their creations was so exciting,” Ms. Fretz said. “Everyone enjoyed the selection of award-winning videos. It seems as if each year the work that students create becomes more advanced and spectacular!”
This year’s show seemed to attract more elementary school age children. Many had pieces on display, but others came to see the work of friends and to browse around the high school sections.
“It was breathtaking to see the professional quality work in drawing and painting, ceramics and sculpture, fashion design, video, photography and computer graphics,” Ms. Fretz said. “For me, it’s a powerful visual statement about how the arts help students to become creative and reflective people, and why the arts are such an integral part of Huntington’s program. My favorite part of the show was hearing parents tell our art teachers how much their art class has helped their child to discover his or her passions and how pleased they are to see them so motivated and eager to work hard. Being successful in a creative venture can really boost a student’s effort and interest in school.”
Members of the district’s central office team turned out for the afternoon fashion show and spent time exploring the exhibits. The finest pieces on display were honored with a Blue Ribbon of Excellence Award.
“The community couldn’t help but be impressed with the incredible quality of work,” Superintendent John J. Finello said. “We have such a multi-faceted art program here in Huntington. All of us should take pride in it.”
