Huntington Senior Wins Holocaust Memorial Award

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County will honor Huntington High School senior Brittany Pucci-Schmitz this Sunday (May 16) at the organization’s 2010 award ceremony.

Ms. Schmitz, who plans to attend SUNY College at Farmingdale and study biology for two years before transferring to the University of Tampa, earned honorable mention recognition in the Center’s annual high school poetry competition for her entry, “I Was Next.” She will read her work at the 2 p.m. ceremony.

“An eager contributor to class discussions, Brittany always brings a new, different perspective to the table,” said Bernadette Walsh, Huntington’s college counselor. “She is one of those people for whom ideas live, and something she picks up in one place, whether in class, in her own reading, or in conversation, she will often find relevant in an entirely different context. She is a confident young lady who is not afraid to make mistakes.”

A student in Huntington English teacher Gina Colica’s Holocaust in Literature course, Ms. Pucci-Schmitz was notified of the honor by Sarah Cushman, director of youth education for the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. The award winning poems will be published in the Center’s annual competition booklet.

“Brittany is a passionate, respectful and meticulously organized,” Ms. Colica said. “She takes pride in her work and articulately speaks her mind.”

The Center is located at Welwyn Preserve, 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove. The awards ceremony is open to the public.
