McQueen Wins in
Dapper Dan Classic
It isn’t easy to compete before a large crowd that almost is almost universally rooting for your opponent to win. Damon McQueen thrives in just that type of atmosphere. The Huntington senior grinded out a 6-1 decision of Alex Dunaway of western Pennsylvania’s McGuffey High School in an all-star meet last Saturday night.
McQueen (119 lbs.) and teammate Ryan Fox (160 lbs.) were invited to participate in the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic as members of the New York team that battled a squad of elite mat stars from western Pennsylvania in the University of Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House.
McQueen (123-9 career record) closed out his scholastic career this winter by winning the New York State crown, finishing the year with a 42-1 mark and setting a new single season victory record for Huntington.
The Blue Devil great wrestled a near perfect match against Dunaway (121-35 lifetime), much to the delight of Rich Romeo, who coached the New York team. Ironically, Romeo, who teaches and coaches outside of Rochester, is a graduate of Huntington High School, where he, too, competed on the Blue Devil mat squad.
Fox (86-24 lifetime), a senior, dropped an exciting 2-1 decision to Troy Reaghard (140-25) of West Allegheny High School. Both wrestlers were on guard against making even the slightest mistake in a match that went right down to the wire.
Following the NY-Western Pennsylvania meet, a second one was held pitting a U.S. all-star team against Pennsylvania’s blue chippers.
The wrestler’s trip included an extensive formal tour of Pittsburgh with teammates and opponents and an extravagant Friday night banquet.
