Kimchy Captures
Isaac Swezey Award

As Alexandra Kimchy nears the end of four glorious years at Huntington High School, the Cornell-bound teenager is reaping the awards that come to those who work hard.

At Huntington’s senior academic awards night held earlier this month in the high school auditorium, Ms. Kimchy was presented with the Isaac Swezey Award for original writing. The honor carries with it a $50 stipend.

“Articulate; good-natured; well-read; talented; committed; creative; thoughtful; modest, reflective; wonderful; these are ways to describe Alexandra Kimchy,” said teacher Michael Schwendemann who presented the award on behalf of the English department.

Ms. Kimchy, a stand-out field hockey and lacrosse player and member of five honor societies, as well as the triathlon and Key clubs, is regarded by Huntington’s teaching corps as an all-around nice person.

“She is most deserving of this honor,” Mr. Schwendemann said. “Every English teacher’s dream, Alex has worked hard to achieve top grades and never hesitates to go that extra mile. She is always prepared to discuss literary themes and symbols, and is also always prepared to accept constructive criticism of her writing. With these attributes, Alex will succeed in all of her future endeavors.”

In addition to the Isaac Swezey Award, Ms. Kimchy also garnered one of two “Let It Begin With Me” - William J. Oliva Memorial Scholarships worth $2,000 and the Martin Schnittman Award for Physics, which includes a $1,000 stipend.

At Cornell, the soon-to-be Huntington grad plans to major in biology in preparation for a career in veterinary science. With a laser-like focus, steely determination and a goal-oriented philosophy, Ms. Kimchy leaves the high school as one of its most successful students ever.

Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello, who was principal of Washington Elementary School when Ms. Kimchy was a student there, said the teenager has made the entire community proud. “Alexandra is a wonderful young woman who has shown that hard work really does pay off,” he said.
