Friends of OHEKA Honor Two Huntington Seniors

Huntington High School seniors Zach Teplin and Kieran McCarthy Fell were presented with Otto Kahn Awards by Friends of OHEKA during the group’s garden party this month at the legendary Gold Coast estate in Cold Spring Hills.

The two Huntington teenagers were among a select group of just five Long Island seniors to earn the Kahn Award and the $2,500 scholarship that accompanies it. “The awards are given in memory of financier and patron of the arts Otto Kahn, who generously provided financial support to struggling artists during the early 20th century,” according to OHEKA’s website.

Mr. Teplin’s artwork was displayed during the event while Ms. McCarthy Fell performed for the crowd. The duo is among the most gifted members of Huntington’s Class of 2010.

Mr. Teplin is headed to Cooper Union on a full scholarship in the fall. He has earned many awards for his drawings and painting, including three in as many years in the Long Island Best competition. He hopes to explore more graphic-oriented work during college. He called winning the Otto Kahn Award “a pretty exhilarating experience”

The scholarship monies will be used by Mr. Teplin for art supplies and incidentals at Cooper Union. “Zach is just a great student,” said Huntington art teacher Kristin Singer. “He is smart, funny, sensitive, serves as an inspiration for my students and is a joy to have in my class. Next year, there definitely will be a hole in my classroom without him.”

Ms. McCarthy Fell will begin classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall. She’s studied flute and piccolo for the past eight years and also added classes in piano and classical guitar. Her musical talent is well-known throughout the state. She said she looks forward to a “musical career” following college.
