SEPTA Honors Hildi Green
and Janet Hoffman

The Huntington School District’s Special Education PTA is a tireless advocate for the programs and services near and dear to the heart of the organization. The group also likes to heap praise on those who have contributed in some special way to the lives of students.
Huntington SEPTA established the Distinguished Service Award to recognize those who have gone the extra mile and played a key role helping students with special needs reach their full potential. This year the organization honored Hildi-Green Stanford and Janet Hoffman.
SEPTA Co-Presidents Madeline London and Kim Scappaticci presented the awards to the two distinguished teachers, who both accepted the honor with humility and appreciation. A crowd of about 125 gave the pair an enthusiastic round of applause at the annual PTA luncheon held earlier this month at The Harbor Club in Halesite.
Ms. Green-Stanford, who said she “goes to a job I love every morning,” is a Huntington High School graduate. She teaches second and third graders in a self-contained special education classroom at Southdown Primary School.
“Hildi has been described as patient, energetic, creative, optimistic and dedicated,” Mrs. London said. “She is loved by her students, who flourish under her personal approach. She always keeps parents in the loop by sharing classroom strategies that work. Fellow teachers also benefit from her sound guidance.”
Ms. Hoffman, who said she believes “Huntington’s special education program is one of the best in the country,” is a speech and language therapist at Jack Abrams School and J. Taylor Finley Middle School.
Mrs. London called her a “loving, nurturing and tireless planner. Children always come first for Janet. She looks at the whole child, recognizing their needs, but most importantly, their individual strengths. Janet Hoffman’s devotion to her field, but most importantly to her students, makes her the personification of distinguished service.”
SEPTA actively solicits nominations for the award and after they are received, a multi-member committee review essays and other materials that document how the individuals facilitate inclusion, interact with students, make a difference in the youngsters’ lives and share their special qualities with parents and other staff members.
