Clifford and McGoldrick win English Awards
Johanna Clifford and Erin McGoldrick graduated from Huntington High School this past June, but not before the duo picked up prestigious scholarships from the English Honor Society for their service around the building.
Ms. Clifford is headed to Case Western Reserve University and Ms. McGoldrick will attend Gettysburg College. The two teenagers walked off the stage at this year’s commencement activities with their heads held high after earning the respect both teachers and classmates alike.
Ms. Clifford, who is planning to major in biomedical engineering in college, was active in the English Honor Society as a junior and senior, serving as vice-president this past year. At times quiet and at other times jovial, she was a “force” among the group’s members as well as being a “reliable and devoted officer,” according to society advisors Helen Guarino and Aimee Antorino.
“Whenever something needed to be done, we knew we could ask Joanna and the task would be accomplished,” the two English teachers said. “She has been heavily involved in all of our efforts from poetry cafes to afternoon cinema and from book drives to bake sales. We are sure she will spread her love of literature and writing to whomever she meets.”
Ms. McGoldrick, who intends to study international relations and political science in college, was also a two-year member of the society, participating in nearly every initiative the group took on. “She was always enthusiastic and involved in the many facets of the society and was one of the few people to enter into a National English Honor Society competition at the national level,” Ms. Guarino and Ms. Antorino said. “Erin’s uniqueness is her charisma. Her passionate devotion to helping others is truly an inspiration.”
“These two young ladies are shining stars in our community,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.
