Flower Hill Star Class

Nicole Malizia is a proud Flower Hill Primary School kindergarten teacher, especially after her 24 students won the inaugural Star Class award as voted by teachers, support staff and Principal Marlon Small.

The award is based upon students being “caught” behaving on the bus, walking quietly in the hallway and being respectful and responsible. Ms. Malizia’s class was honored after garnering the most “stars.” The group was given a special party.

Now in her seventh year at Flower Hill, Ms. Malizia earned a bachelor’s degree at Long Island University in elementary education and psychology. She obtained a master’s degree at Dowling College in literary.

“We were noticed by other staff members, being respectful, responsible and safe,” Ms. Malizia said. “The children were entitled to celebrate by enjoying some healthy snacks while watching “Happy Feet!” The students later posed for a commemorative photo while holding the famous Fantastic Foxes sign.

Ms. Malizia came to Flower Hill in September 2003 and worked as a kindergarten teacher for two years before moving to first grade for the next four years. She returned to the kindergarten level for the current school year. “I have truly enjoyed working with both grades,” she said. “It has been so rewarding over the last seven years seeing how these children progress.”

Nearly halfway through the current school year, Ms. Malizia is pleased with the two dozen students in her class. “They are all amazing,” she said about the youngsters. “They have improved tremendously since September and I am amazed at how much they've learned academically and socially.”

In succeeding months, there will be additional Star Class awards presented and more happy teachers and students.
