Liz Mohr Gets Ready to Save Lives

Ask a teenager or ask a teacher about Liz Mohr and they will both probably say with affection and respect, “she’s a really good kid.” The Huntington High School senior is mature beyond her years and remarkably focused for someone her age.

Ms. Mohr isn’t sleepwalking through her last year of high school, instead making every day count. She’s participating in the career internship program and taking Honors Physics, Spanish 12, AP AB Calculus, Economics, Participation in Government, Journalism, Film and Short Story, Ceramics and Sculpture III and physical education.

The first part of her internship has involved riding on a Huntington Community First Aid Squad ambulance. The second half of the program began this week. It will take Ms. Mohr to Huntington Hospital and expose her to the life of a nurse. “I will be observing different areas of the hospital to get a better view of what I may like to do when I am older,” she said.

Her post-graduation plans are already set. Ms. Mohr has been accepted into SUNY College at Farmingdale’s four-year nursing program that culminates in a Bachelor of Science degree.

The senior is on her way to completing the EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician- Basic) requirements. The class ends in June. She will also continue volunteering with the HCFAS, as she’s down for the past 3 ½ years. As a junior member of the squad she’s part of Explorer Post 215. “It is a division of the Boy Scouts which focuses on one Merit Badge (Emergency Medical Services),” Ms. Mohr said. “I was captain for six months and will be post chief for two years in July.” She helps run two meetings and at least two training sessions each month.

Since joining the squad, Ms. Mohr completed various certifications, including “responding to emergencies” and CPR/AED. She’s a dispatcher, handling radio communications and keeping track of paper work for calls and is an aide on the ambulance.

At Huntington High School she’s been a science lab assistant, a member of the National Science Honor Society and has played on the varsity volleyball and lacrosse teams. Ms. Mohr’s creative side has been nurtured in ceramics and sculpture classes. During the second year in the program, her work was chosen for the Long Island’s Best exhibit and competition at the Heckscher Museum where she won the prestigious Rienzo S. Bianchi Award.

Science teacher Anna Fabela and art teacher Robert Potter are Ms. Mohr’s favorites. She’s Ms. Fabela’s lab assistant this year. She also gives high marks to the Project Adventure I, II and III physical education course sequence. “It really got me to have trust with my classmates and have a different view of everyone and everything,” the senior said.

“My high school experience was very enjoyable,” Ms. Mohr said. “No complaints.”
