Blue Devil Sports News
John Patron’s 27 points led the Huntington boys’ basketball team over host Rocky Point, 56-44. The Blue Devils trailed after one quarter, 9-6 and the score was knotted at halftime, 21-21. But, Huntington’s shooters ruled the roost in the second half, outscoring the Eagles, 35-23.
Patron dropped in a dozen baskets from the field and added three free throws during his productive evening. John McCarthy and Shaquan Rains scored 10 points each, respectively. Tre Brown added another seven and Jeremy Rhodes scored two points.
Boys’ Tennis Readies
The Huntington boys’ tennis team is getting ready for the season. Last spring the Blue Devils went 2-12 but there are expectations of a much more competitive squad this year, with almost the entire varsity roster returning to the courts.
Huntington will be led by juniors Cole Peters and David Stillman and seniors Max Smoller and Justin Greenidge. Also eligible to return are Robert Hughes, Steven Inman, Tyler Moore, Dan Rabinowitz, Matt Rubin, Michael Valente and Peter Wagner.
At the close of last season head coach Jamie Fishlow said the Blue Devils were “very young and inexperienced. The players have good skills, but they need to become more competitive during match play.”
The coach said last spring that Smoller displayed “good skill from the baseline,” but “typically played superior competition” in the No. 1 singles position. Stillman was called an “up and coming player who with work can develop,” Fishlow said.
Huntington will compete in League II and both Fishlow and his players are expecting to win many more meets than they did in 2009.
McCourt Pumps in 14
Senior Meredith McCourt pumped in 14 points and contributed five assists to help the Huntington girls’ basketball team seal a crucial victory over Rocky Point, 54-36. The Blue Devils jumped out to a nine point lead in the opening minutes before the Eagles rallied to close to within 13-8 by the end of the first quarter. Then Huntington’s offense outscored Rocky Point the rest of the way, 41-28.
Lauren Visbal (12 points, 10 rebounds), Raynisha Witherspoon (10 points), Jackie Waldron (nine points) and Emma Hayes-Hurley (six points) participated in the Blue Devils’ well-balanced attack.
Varsity Players Help
Blue Devil varsity volleyball players Liz Mohrs, Natalie Acton, Haley Brown and Samantha Greenidge volunteered to help coach Caroline Reilly work with the J. Taylor Finley Middle School team this winter. The teenagers assisted throughout the season and helped the younger players learn and improve their skills.
Blue Devils Win Fierce Battle
The Huntington boys’ basketball team staged a fourth quarter rally to defeat Sayville, 53-47 as John Patron scored 31 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. The Blue Devils trailed at halftime, 25-22 and were down 36-32 after three quarters before going on a 21-11 run in the final eight minutes.
Shaquan Rains scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Tre Brown added five points and seven assists. Jeremy Rhodes and John McCarthy combined for another five points.
The game was a fierce battle throughout. While neither team will be advancing to the post-season, both squads played with a high degree of intensity. Patron’s remarkable game included 16 fourth quarter points.
Just Short
A win would have clinched a playoff spot, but the Huntington girls’ basketball team fell just short at Sayville, losing to the Golden Flashes, 40-36.
Sayville led throughout most of the game as the Blue Devils trailed, 9-5 after one quarter and 24-17 at halftime before a third quarter rally cut the deficit to 32-30.
Jackie Waldron and Meredith McCourt scored 12 points each for Huntington. Lauren Visbal added another six and Emma Hayes-Hurley and Raynisha Witherspoon combined for six more.
Second Half Problematic
John McCarthy dropped four buckets from downtown but the Huntington boys’ basketball team faltered in the second half as Islip toppled the Blue Devils, 71-51.
McCarthy hit on four three-point baskets, scoring 14 points overall. The Buccaneers led 18-15 after one quarter and 32-26 at halftime. In the second half, Islip outscored the Blue Devils, 39-25 to put the game away.
Huntington’s John Patron added 14 points and Shaquan Rains and Tre Brown scored nine and eight points, respectively. Jeremy Rhodes and Jack Forster combined for another six points.
