Huntington Tops at Hofstra Poetry Competition

Huntington High School’s AP Spanish and Native Language Arts students won top prizes in this spring’s Hofstra University Spanish poetry contest. This marks the second consecutive year that Huntington has walked away with more awards than any other Long Island high school.

Huntington’s top performers included:

• Isaías Granados, first place in original poem category, “La perfecta ciudad” (The Perfect City).

• Colleen Teubner, first place in the non-native category, “La muralla” (The Wall) by Nicolas Guillen.

• Rebecca Silverman, second place, non-native category, “Anoche cuando dormía” (Last Night as I Slept) by Antonio Machado.

• Luis Fernando Cordero, second place, native speaker category, “La niña de Guatemala” (The Girl from Guatemala) by Jose Marti (Mr. Cordero won second place in the original poem category last year).

• Julio Garciaguirre, third place, native speaker category, “Me gustas cuando callas” (I Like It When You’re Silent) by Pablo Neruda.

“These students recited their poems with great powerful emotion,” Huntington teacher Mercy Peña said.

Jose Cordero, who received a participation certificate, also gave “an amazing performance,” Ms. Pena said. “Jose won second place last year and gave excellent tips to the new NLA contestants that were participating this year. All the practice by students during their free periods and after school was worth it.”

The annual poetry contest is sponsored by Hofstra’s Department of Romance Languages and conducted under the direction of Dr. Zenia Sacks da Silva. This year’s event drew about160 high school students from Nassau and Suffolk. Ms. Peña said she is “very proud to be the teacher of our extraordinary Huntington High School poets.”
