Huntington Qualifies Six for National Merit Scholarship Program

Huntington High School Principal Carmela Leonardi has been notified that six current juniors have qualified to enter the prestigious 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. The teenagers are among an elite group nationwide to advance into the academic competition, which began in 1955.

Huntington students Adam Cerini, Conner Davis, Carolyn Fante, Alexandra Kiley, Michael O’Connor and Giancarlo Savoy have all qualified for the National Merit program. Each of them compiled a selection index of at least 201, placing them among the top 50,000 out of 1.5 million participants, Principal Carmela Leonardi said. About 16,000 will later be named National Merit semifinalists. The remaining 34,000 will be officially commended for their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“It is such a pleasure to interact with students who work so hard and who always put forth their best effort,” Dr. Leonardi said. “These students are very bright, very personable and very motivated. They do us all proud. We, as a staff, are very fortunate to be able to support them in their efforts.”

Dr. Leonardi said the Huntington students will learn next September if they are destined for semi-finalist status in the program. Semi-finalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition, which will culminate with the naming of 8,200 National Merit finalists in February 2011. Finalists will begin being notified next March if they have been selected to receive a financial award.
