Primary School Science Fair Initiative a Success

Any initiative that mixes learning with fun seems to have a better than average chance of success. That was the case with the late March science fairs in the four primary school buildings in the Huntington School District.

All four fairs were held on the same day and allowed students to tackle a variety of topics and expand their horizons. The events were toured throughout the day by students and teachers. Parents and other family members turned out to inspect the projects during after school hours.

“This is a culminating event for projects that are done in each of the classrooms at each of the primary buildings,” explained David Casamento, the district director of science and instructional technology who spurred the initiative. “The initial purpose of these fairs was to introduce and reinforce the ‘scientific method,’ a central scientific concept that all students need to know. Students were also given the option of developing an individual project for display. Of those projects, one student in each grade level was selected as the winner and several honorable mentions were awarded to other individual projects.”

The winning entries on each grade level in each of the buildings will now advance to the Brookhaven National Lab Elementary Science Fair on May 1, where they will compete against projects entered from across Suffolk.

Mr. Casamento believes this year’s participation in the science fairs was the highest ever. The number of parents, families, and friends who attended the evening events at each building exceeded his imagination.

“I am so very proud of our youngest students, their parents, and their teachers,’ Mr. Casamento said. “Some of the topics presented were truly original and exciting for the students to do. This is where science comes to life for our youngsters and I am excited about each of the winner’s possibilities at Brookhaven. I look forward to an even more successful event next year and beyond.”
