Finley First Edition Nears Publication

While the newspaper industry might be enduring significant struggles all over the country, the Finley First Edition remains popular as publication of its first issue of the school year nears.

Finley's newspaper club meets every Tuesday afternoon. The first issue, which is expected to be in the hands of students during the first week of November, will feature an interview with veteran social studies teacher and coach Rick Eriksen, articles about the school's pep rally and Halloween dance, a letter to seventh graders by an eighth grader offering the younger students advice and tricks of the trade and an interview with Principal John Amato during which he will discuss the new team names.

The kick-off copy will also include pieces on the Finley Falcon club, cyber-bulling, Latin classes, the honor society's involvement in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, as well as an advice column and horoscope section. "I'm also trying to get a few students to write articles about this season's sports teams," Ms. Schiller said.

Students typically devour each edition, as the seventh and eighth graders chat up stories with each other. "The paper comes out about once a quarter," Ms. Schiller said. "We haven't decided on editors yet. The kids this year seem to want to take a part in a little bit of everything."

This year's writing corps includes Charles Beers. "He wrote many different articles for the paper last year and is an excellent and amazing writer," Ms. Schiller said. Ari Wohl will work as a photographer and sports writer. Ann Glackin and John Arias will concentrate on feature stories. Julia Zinn has taken on the advice column. Kyle Hansen is paper's cartoonist. Ben Hebert is writing movie and book reviews.

Several other students are writing articles about events taking place at Finley and around Huntington. This group includes A'kira Watkins, Grace Rowley, Spencer Pashkin, Ryan Sansiviero, Page Montecalvo, Jose Salmeron, Richie Sempowich, Lanostaglia Sease, Anne Osias, Alanna Cribbin and Meelod Wafajow.
