Fishing Trip Brings Friends Together
Steaming out of Huntington Harbor on the charter boat James Joseph II, Huntington School District buildings and grounds staff members were feeling good and thinking about catching fish, not their normal work routines.
The trip has become an annual tradition and is now in its tenth year. On a late summer’s night, a dozen men boarded the boat in Halesite and filled up the stern area. There were plenty of laughs and some outrageous storytelling to go with a relaxed mood.
It wasn’t long before the fish starting biting. Anyone who has ever dropped a line in the water knows what it’s like when the action gets hot. There almost isn’t time to even breathe.
“Everybody always has a great time,” said Al Manzi, head custodian at Washington Primary School. The Huntington contingent loaded up on bluefish and striped bass during the memorable evening. District carpenter John Williams won the boat pool by landing a 10 lb. bluefish.
“The weather was perfect,” Mr. Manzi said. “Everyone caught plenty of fish, both blues and stripped bass.” When it comes time for the trip, phone lines start to light up and the same bunch quickly confirms their attendance.
The Huntington group offered compliments to the James Joseph II crew and Captain James Schneider, who is said to have “unsurpassed” knowledge of Long Island’s North Shore waters.
Will there be a second decade of fishing excursions for the Huntington colleagues? Absolutely. Perhaps the crowd will be even larger next time out. “Everybody is always welcome,” Mr. Manzi said. “It’s a night were everyone gets together as good friends, not co-workers!”
