Catching up with Sarah Conte
Sarah Conte was a bubbly presence around Huntington High School and she has been missed by many this fall. She’s not too far away at Manhattan College in Riverdale, but in reality it’s a whole different world with countless new experiences and opportunities for intellectual and personal growth.
“All is terrific,” Ms. Conte said. “I am having so much fun. I love all of my roommates and have made a ton of new friends.” The Huntington grad is enrolled in an interesting set of courses, including Nature and Experience of Religion (a world religion course that Ms. Conte said she “loves”), Western Culture (a literature course), Spanish, Topics in Science and Introduction to Mass Communications.
The Huntington grad is a communications major and “hoping to concentrate on advertising and design.” She also plans to minor in digital photography and possibility Spanish. “We’ll see how things go,” she said about the later.
Naturally college life has required some changes in Ms. Conte’s normal routine. For example, she’s currently residing in a suite with three other girls. But, she is on her way to a very good freshman year. “I just finished up mid-terms and have done really well on all of them,” she said. “I haven't gotten below a B+!”
Last June Ms. Conte, a member of the local chapter of the National Honor Society, led fellow Class of 2009 members into Blue Devil Stadium for the 148th commencement as she carried the school banner along with Marcello Guardado.
At Huntington, Ms. Conte was on the staff of the high school yearbook, was an intern with photography teacher Pamela Piffard, participated in the after school club program and was the girls’ fencing team’s MVP as a senior. Her classmates even voted her “best dressed” last year.
Ms. Piffard called her former intern “awesome” and described Ms. Conte as a “sweet, super well-rounded young woman. She’s totally reliable. You never have to lower your expectations for her. She meets every challenge.”
In less than two months on the Riverdale campus, Ms. Conte has really embraced Manhattan College. “At this point, I have become very involved in my school's radio station,” she said. “I'm a DJ every Wednesday for an hour and am on the advertising committee. I make flyers for upcoming events and am going to be in a commercial we will be making.”
The radio station currently streams over the internet on the campus JasperNet network via WRCMradio.org. “One of the big goals for this year is to get our radio station either on the actual radio or streaming to anyone over the internet,” Ms. Conte said. “I am hoping to possibly get involved in my school's advertising club as well as some of the community service oriented clubs.”
When the Huntington alum returns to her alma mater she’ll still have plenty of admirers among the school’s faculty.
