Huntington School Briefs

 

Math teacher Bienvenido Franco and Huntington High School have been recognized for participating in the evaluation of a new textbook, the 3rd edition of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project’s Pre-Calculus and Discrete Mathematics.

 

“Mr. Franco and Huntington High School participated in a one-year pilot with groups of educators from around the country during the 2008-09 school year as the only representative from New York,” said O. Wayne Edwards, district director of mathematics. “We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and celebrate with him.”

SEPTA Meeting

The Huntington Special Education PTA will hold an open meeting on Wednesday, October 14 at 10 a.m. in the Jack Abrams Intermediate School auditorium. Nancy Wilson, assistant director of special education and student support services, will be the guest speaker.

Claire Beach Leads the Freshmen Class

This year’s freshmen class at Huntington High School is led by a group of students elected by classmates. The frosh level General Organization officers include Claire Beach (president), Stephanie Rafuse (vice-president), Todd Colvin (treasurer), Raynisha Witherspoon (corresponding secretary), Brianne Bennett (recording secretary) and Christian King (historian).

 

Guidance counselor Casey Horowitz and social studies teacher Lauren Desiderio are the freshmen class advisors.

College Center Update

College representatives continue to file into the Huntington High School college counseling center on a daily basis. In recent days students were able to meet with reps from St. John’s University, Fairfield University, Brandeis University, Johnson & Wales University, Virginia Tech University, Sarah Lawrence College, University of Maryland at College Park and Juniata College.

Student Lab Assistants

Huntington School Board members appointed Huntington High School students Michelle Rosenbauer, Rachel Bosco, Tatiana DiPaola, Lena Freed, Richard Gray, Justin Greenidge, Benjamin Jensen, Connor Leek, Samantha Mohr and Elizabeth Mohr as lab assistants for the 2009/10 school year. They will be paid $7.15 per hour.

School Budget Update

Huntington School Board members set the 2009/10 budget at $105,004,259, which represents an increase of 1.34 percent over last years figure of $103,617,414. The tax rate will move from $190.46 per $100 of assessed valuation to $194.02.

 

Projected revenues include state aid of $12,452,003, miscellaneous revenue of $1.649 million, an appropriated fund balance of $1.405 million and property taxes of $89,498,256.

Stage Crew

Huntington High School students Bo Ashley Brindley, Brian Connell, Alyssa Fennington, Dylan Ferber, Katherine Getz, Julia Sorto, LeeAnn DeRosa, Michael Lambui, Olivia Limbach and Gabriella Ferreira were appointed as stage crew members by the Huntington School Board. They will be paid $7.15 per hour when they work on production sets, etc.

Club Advisors

A variety of club advisors were appointed by Huntington School Board members this past Monday night. At Jack Abrams Intermediate School, Allison VonVange, Katherine Canales and Karen Morea were named drama club directors. At J. Taylor Finley Middle School, Susan Hahn was appointed drama club director and Esmeralda Tello was approved as advisor for the Yorker Club.

 

At Huntington High School, Lori Pyzocha and Dame Forbes were approved as science honor society advisors. Lora Ayala was re-appointed as advisor for the Highsteppers, the high school’s competitive dance team. Kristen Margraf was named assistant advisor for the Highsteppers.

58th Reunion Planned

Complete details have not yet been released, but Huntington High School’s Class of 1952 is planning a 58th reunion July 9-11, 2010. A formal banquet is slated for the Melville Marriott and there will be other events over the course of the weekend.

Washington School Bursting

Washington Primary School has an enrollment of 396 students, according to a recent enrollment report compile by Assistant Superintendent Joseph Giani. Flower Hill (378), Southdown (359) and Jefferson (357) also have healthy enrollments. Woodhull Intermediate School has 523 students and Jack Abrams Intermediate School has an enrollment of 517. There are 670 seventh and eighth graders at J. Taylor Finley Middle School and 1,253 students at Huntington High School.

Federal Funds

The Huntington School District is benefiting from nearly $2 million in funding from the federal government this year. The monies, which filter down to the district through the state, come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This is the federal government’s economic stimulus program.

 

The Huntington School District is receiving five different grants amounting to $1,978,342 as part of the program. The grants help offset general fund, remedial reading and math, special education and teacher center expenses. Assistant Superintendent David H. Grackin said the district must submit extensive documentation on a quarterly basis regarding how it is spending the funds.
