Top Finley Musicians Perform at Hofstra

The Huntington School District has produced some exceptional young musicians over the years and the pipeline shows no signs of running dry anytime soon.

A select group of seventh graders from J. Taylor Finley Middle School recently participated in this fall’s Hofstra University Middle School Honors Band Festival.

Finley’s representatives included Thomas Kouttron (tuba), Ruhi Shah (trombone), Jason Moreira (French horn), Hannah Maiorello (oboe), Megan Boyce (flute), Mary Sheehan (clarinet), Nicholas Pandolfi (trumpet), John Reilly (baritone), Kayla Eidle (French horn) and Daniel Rose (alto sax).

Nearly 300 young musicians performed alongside the 110-member Hofstra symphonic band. Dozens of Long Island district were represented. The Finley contingent was among the largest of any district. They were accompanied by Finley band director Chris Scarnato.

“The performance featured the music of world-renowned composer and guest conductor Robert W. Smith, one of the most-performed composers of band music in the world today,” Mr. Scarnato said. “The annual event is designed to enhance the education and development of young band performers while at the same time rewarding their past accomplishments.”

Over the course of the two-day program, the Finley students learned important performance techniques and gained insight into the composer’s works. The band rehearsed on the campus the day before the full concert. It was an experience the Finley students will remember for a long time
