Assemblyman Conte Administers Oath to Husky Officials

Assemblyman James D. Conte recently traveled down New York Avenue from his nearby district office to administer the oath of office to the newly elected officers of the Husky student leadership organization at Jack Abrams Intermediate School.

The swearing-in ceremony was held during the school’s October Citizen of the Month Award full-school assembly program in the gym before a crowd of more than 600 students, teachers, support staff members and parents.

The new officers include Cole Seccafico (president), Luke Giordano (4th grade vice-president), Kayla Ryan (5th grade vice-president), Page Montecalvo (6th grade vice-president), Taylor Moreno (treasurer) and Sophia Latt (secretary).

The group of student leaders was elected from an original field of 75. Scott Armyn, the school’s dean of students, explained a primary election was utilized to bring the number of candidates for each position down to four for the final general election ballot. Mr. Armyn and fifth grade teacher Paul Esposito are the co-advisors to the student organization.

"Many students who held room-representative or officer positions last year chose to go for it again and a competitive campaign ensued,” Mr. Armyn said. “The result was a group of officers that we can be extremely proud of and we trust that they will be enthusiastically involved in the mission of the H.S.L.O., which is to help make our school a great place to be and learn."

After administering the oath of office to the new officials, Assemblyman Conte, a graduate of Huntington High School, discussed how voting is critical to maintaining our democratic traditions and enables citizens to hold their elected officials accountable.

H.S.L.O.’s first initiative is a Thanksgiving food drive. It will benefit the Helping Hand Rescue Mission’s work in addressing the issue of hunger in the community.
