Highsteppers Celebrate Season and Announce Tryouts
Fresh off another successful season, the Huntington Highsteppers are laying the groundwork for the future. The group will hold tryouts June 1-2 for those interested in joining the high school’s competitive dance team.
The Highsteppers perform at Huntington High School basketball and football games and enter local, regional and national dance, kickline and pom routine competitions. The team is coming off another exciting year of travel and competitive success and wants to keep its momentum going strong.
At the National Dance Alliance championships at Hunter College in Manhattan, which featured teams from several different countries, the Highsteppers turned in an impressive showing, winning first place in pom and team performance and finishing second in kickline.
In a series of local competitions at Nassau Community College, Huntington’s best scores included first place in both pom and team performance and third place in dance team and kickline.
This year’s team was captained by seniors Alisa Sosa and Kerrie Greene and juniors Molly Smith and Sarah Kulchinsky. It included Emily Buchholtz, Renna Wirchin, Annie Minoff, Emilie Pugliese, Alexa Giammorino, Aliyah Cohen, Allie Wieland, Jessica Harris, Michelina Raczka, Kari Peer, Mary Maiorello, Kelly McConnell, Rachel Russo, Bianca Iarrobino and Esti Lodge.
"This highstepping dance team is full of hardworking girls that not only become part of a team, but become sisters who form lasting friendships that last even after the season has ended,” head coach Lora Ayala said. “This year, we had the opportunity to compete at one of the dance industry’s top competitions in Orlando, Florida. Although it was a very tough competition, the girls are now even more focused and determined to return next year in full force. "
Students currently in grades 8-11 are invited to try-out for next year’s Highsteppers team on Monday and Tuesday, June 1-2 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in the Jefferson Primary School gym. Tryout participants are asked to come both nights and wear comfortable clothing of any color on Monday and all black clothing or black dance clothes on Tuesday. Dance shoes or sneakers should also be worn. Tryout participates will learn the dance routine segments on Monday and then review the dances and audition on Tuesday.
