Max Sender Earns Four-Year Scholarship

Max Sender is heading south.  The Huntington High School senior won a National Scholar Award from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and he has decided to accept it.  The scholarship will cover all of his tuition and fees while he pursues an undergraduate degree in political science.

During four years of high school, Mr. Sender has produced an enviable record.  He’s been on the honor roll every marking period, participated in the concert and symphony orchestras, been a contributing member of the Key club and varsity baseball team, wrote feature stories for The Dispatch, Huntington’s student newspaper, worked as a sales associate at West Marine and garnered a long list of honors and awards.

Mr. Sender’s mother, Debra, is a native of New Orleans.  She graduated from LSU in 1973 with a bachelor of arts in psychology before moving to New York, where she earned a master’s degree in school psychology at Queens College in 1983.

“Most of my family suffered devastating losses during Hurricane Katrina and have relocated to North Carolina,” Mrs. Sender said.  “However, a few remain.  Max knew he wanted to go south for college and has always loved the culture and friendliness of the people of Louisiana, not to mention the LSU Tigers and their excellent sports programs.  A few years ago he attended a Tiger’s baseball camp at LSU and he was hooked.”

In a college application essay, Mr. Sender wrote about how as a nine year old, his first fishing trip helped him begin “to develop three important character traits: patience, responsibility and hard work.”

That trip also led to an interest in boating.  “I loved being on the open water just taking in the fresh salt air,” Mr. Sender said.  “I convinced my dad to buy a used boat, reminding him we live on Long Island, home to some of the most gorgeous coastline in the nation.”

That same love for natural beauty and the environment continues.  Mr. Sender, who has been a catcher and third baseman on the Blue Devil baseball team, hopes to eventually go on to law school and work in political communications, possibly even lobbying for environmental causes, including those involving the wetlands of Louisiana’s Gulf Coast.

Mr. Sender is one of only 30 out-of-state students from a possible pool of 25,000 to be offered a LSU National Scholar Award and one of only eight to accept the scholarship.  His biography was accepted for publication in Who’s Who Among American High School Students, putting him in the company of only five percent of students from 24,000 high schools nationally.

As a Huntington baseball player, Mr. Sender has had his share of big hits.  One of those came this spring when he sent a double down the right field line to snap a 1-1 seventh inning tie and send the Blue Devils to a 4-1 victory over Comsewogue.

In a January 2009 edition of The Dispatch, Mr. Sender collaborated with classmate Mike McCourt on an informative and humorous review of community pizza shops.  His articles have typically been well-received and he definitely has a knack for writing.

One of the most colorful members of the Class of 2009, Mr. Sender has left his mark at Huntington High School.  Teachers won’t be surprised if he goes out and helps change the world.
