Ruggiero Picks up Golden Eleven Award at Brunch
Brian Ruggiero, who captained and quarterbacked the Huntington football team last fall, picked up a coveted National Football Foundation Golden Eleven Award at a brunch that attracted a crowd numbering in the hundreds at the Crest Hollow Country Club.
“It was a great event and an honor well deserved for all of the award winners, especially our boy Brian Ruggiero,” said Ron Wilson, who served as Blue Devil football head coach last fall.
Among the honorees at the event was Bud Willie, who serves on the board of directors of the Huntington youth football program known as the Bulldogs. “He was also very proud to see one of his own to receive this Suffolk County Golden Eleven Award. He didn't coach Ruggiero, but knew him from when he played PAL football.”
Ruggiero is headed to Tufts University next fall. He has decided to play lacrosse at the Boston area school. Last Ruggiero enjoyed a wonderful senior campaign for Huntington, completing 73-of-113 passes for 851 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed 76 times for 435 yards and five touchdowns, made 38 solo tackles and even intercepted a pass. He also found time to remain one of the school’s top students.
“Ruggiero is one who exemplifies what it means to be a scholar-athlete,” Wilson said. “His accomplishments in the classroom and on the gridiron are incredible. He's a National Honor Society member and contributes greatly to his community, as well as those who are in dire need of volunteers. He is now part of a fraternity that is recognized worldwide for all of his great efforts and contributions.”
Well-regarded and well-liked by teammates and coaches, Ruggiero led by example, working hard and playing hard and helping to keep Huntington in every game. Off the field, he is just as golden and those around him see unlimited potential.
“Trust me, there is more to come from this you man,” Wilson said. “He's got quite a bit to offer and I can rest in knowing that our future will be better because of individuals like him.”
