Huntington School Board Notes
At their last meeting, Huntington School Board members granted leaves of absence to teachers Jessica McVetty (Washington, April 16 through June 26), Danielle Nolan (Flower Hill, May 5 through June 26) and Ivonne Szabo (Southdown, May 4 through June 26). All of the leaves are for child care related reasons.
Trustees also approved the retirement of Dr. Barbara Lacey, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and Patricia DeLecce, a high school clerical employee. Woodhull Intermediate School music teacher Peter Deschler’s resignation was accepted, effective at the close of business on June 30. Jefferson Primary School teacher assistant Daphine Harkins’ request to return from a leave of absence was approved effective May 11.
Trustees also took the following actions:
- Granted tenure to Finley Middle School ESL teacher Eileen Melloy, effective May 20.
- Appointed clerical employee Marion Guilfoy to work as a clerk at the May 19 budget vote and trustee election. She will be paid $20 per hour.
- Appointed Lauren Thomas to serve as a social studies teacher in the alternative high school at the rate of $51.19 per hour.
- Appointed Allison Pollard and Kerri Titone as adult education program instructors at the rate of $25 per hour.
- Approved the addition of Laura Lambiase, Christina Gottlieb, Bernadette Phelan, George Geist and Michael Visco to the substitute teacher list. They will be paid $90 per day for per diem work.
- Added Peter Brosoff (aide), Samuel Cutrone (custodian), Walter Wilson (security), Lindsey Marotta (aide, clerical), Danielle Jeshiva (nurse) and Michael Visco (aide) to the substitute employee list.
- Adjusted the conclusion of teacher assistant Daphine Harkins’ probationary period from Sept. 1 to Nov. 16 due to an unpaid leave of absence.
- Approved an instructional services agreement with Ascent: A School for Individuals with Autism, located in Deer Park.
- Approved a consultant services contract with Plainview-based L.I. Professional & Parent Education Network to provide anti-bully workshops with students, teachers and parents in order to educate participants about bullying and provide solutions to deal with bullying. The district will pay $375 per session for 15 sessions.
- Accepted a donation of $5,529.66 from the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education to fund various successful grant proposals.
- Awarded a bid for a new wrestling mat to Dollamur Sport Surfaces in the amount of $13,465.
- Accepted donations of various cameras, lenses, and flash attachments from Jean diMonda, Charlie Lang, Larry and Karen Turner, Patricia Duclos and Carol McGovern. The items will be used in the Huntington High School photography program.
- Approved consultant services contracts with Laura Van Tassell and Christy Baralis to provide an in-service course through the Huntington Teacher Center titled “Meeting the Needs of ESL Learners.” They will be paid $750 each, respectively.
- Approved a change order in the amount of $18,900 related to additional work during an asbestos abatement project at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. Thermo Tech Combustion of Farmingdale was previously awarded the contract. The change order brought the contract sum to $114,470.
- Approved a consultant services contract with Susan Simonds for a Huntington Teacher Center workshop titled “Digital Portfolio.” She will be paid $100 per hour for the two-hour workshop.
- Approved a consultant services contract with David Badanes, Esq. for an adult education program course titled “Child Support and Child Custody in a Divorce: What you Don’t Know Can Hurt You.” He will be paid $10 per student.
- Approved an agreement with Challenge Day of Concord, CA to provide a program on November 30 at Huntington High School for $3,200.
