Washington Students Pay Tribute to Officer Glen Ciano

The horrific car crash that led to the tragic death of Suffolk Police Officer Glen Ciano deeply touched the students in third grade teacher Debbie Quiles’ class at Washington Primary School.  So much so, the youngsters created a small book to give to the brave officer’s family.

“I asked the kids to think outside of themselves,” Ms. Quiles explained.  “It’s important for children to think of others, especially those in our community whose lives are in jeopardy on a daily basis.”

Officer Ciano was killed two weeks ago in an early Sunday morning collision with a suspected drunk driver, who has been arrested.  The tragedy was especially jolting to Ms. Quiles since her own father was a New York City police officer for 20 years, assigned to the 72nd precinct in Brooklyn.

On the day after the crash, Ms. Quiles said her class “brainstormed adjectives that describe police officers.  Each child received a page with an adjective and drew a picture that portrayed that adjective.”

The student’s pages were laminated and bound into a small book.  Mrs. Quiles took the volume in hand and drove to the 2nd Precinct on Park Avenue.  As she neared it, a caravan of cars headed to the late officer’s wake became visible.  So, she drove up to one of the vehicles, gained the attention of officers riding in the car and handed the book to them, explaining what it was and who produced it.  “They immediately started flipping through it,” she said.

Officer Ciano was labeled a hero by the Washington students, who learned about the courage often required of those serve in uniform.
