Akeem Muhammad Bursts onto Fashion Scene
Akeem Muhammad really found his groove in Huntington High School’s fashion program, bursting onto the scene and displaying a real talent and flair that has opened a world of opportunities the senior didn’t even know existed just a few short years ago.
“Akeem has been in the fashion program for three years,” said Kristin Singer, an art teacher who leads fashion classes along with colleague Amy Worth. “He absolutely lives for fashion. Whenever he has a free moment during the school day, Akeem comes to the art room, where he has spent countless hours working on and improving his designing and sewing skills.”
Mr. Muhammad’s commitment to excellence and dedication to his craft is already paying dividends. He has been accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology fashion design program on a full scholarship. “The fashion design program is extremely competitive, being one of the top fashion programs in the country,” Ms. Singer said.
At a series of spring shows that featured fashions designed by Huntington students, Mr. Muhammad’s work sparkled and earned him loud applause when he appeared on the runway to take a bow.
“I predict great things in the future for Akeem,” Ms. Singer said. “He is multi-talented, also being an accomplished dancer and singer.” Mr. Muhammad was a finalist in the recent Huntington Music Idol competition.
FIT is located at 7th Avenue and 27th Street in Manhattan. Last fall the school enrolled 7,055 full-time and 3,010 part-time students, including 9,854 undergraduates and 211 in graduate programs. It’s location to some of the great fashion houses in the world has helped enhance its reputation.
Mr. Muhammad will graduate this week with the complete respect of his teachers. “I am certain one day he will be a successful fashion designer or work in the entertainment industry,” Ms. Singer said. “He is an unforgettable student and will certainly be missed in the fashion program at Huntington High School.”
