Erin Coffey’s Quinnipiac Lax Career is Complete
Erin Coffey finished up her college lacrosse career in fine fashion, starting all 16 games for Quinnipiac University, which advanced to the finals of the Northeast Conference before dropping an 11-6 decision to Sacred Heart.
Coffey, who graduated from Huntington High School in 2005, picked up 32 ground balls, drew six charges, caused 25 turnovers and turned the ball over only four times all season. She was tied for the conference lead in caused turnovers. This was a big year for Quinnipiac, which claimed victories over the University of Connecticut and Brown.
“I loved playing lacrosse in college and it is definitely an accomplishment of which I am extremely proud,” Coffey said. “It had its ups and downs and tough points, but overall I wouldn't give up my experiences for anything.”
At Huntington, Coffey was a four-year member of the soccer, track and lacrosse teams. She captained the soccer and lacrosse squads, earning All-League honors in both sports. Her play contributed to a pair of Suffolk soccer crowns. She also was Huntington’s recipient of the Unsung Hero Award in lacrosse. Since the day she stepped on the campus, the Huntington alum has been an integral part of the Quinnipiac lacrosse team and was known for her hard-nosed defensive play.
Coffey’s teammates at Quinnipiac voted her the Outstanding Defender on the team. She was also a first team Northeast Conference selection and a three-time Scholar Athlete Award winner. She graduated this past spring with a bachelor of arts degree in history and is currently in the fifth and final year of the Quinnipiac Master of Arts in Teaching graduate education program, which results in a BA and MAT after five years.
“I will conclude my Quinnipiac career with a master’s in elementary education and will have had the privilege of having earned these degrees as a student athlete,” Coffey said. “Hopefully I will find a place at an elementary school and maybe even coaching someday!”
