Huntington School Briefs
As the Huntington High School band’s 75th anniversary celebration continues to take shape, retired music teacher and former band director Linda Shoemaker has announced the results of some research she has been doing.
Ms. Shoemaker has tracked down the origins of the Huntington Highsteppers, the high school’s competitive dance team. Former band director Rufus Kern created the Highsteppers as part of the Blue Devil band in the mid-1960s. Patty Woodard, who was an elementary school teacher at the time, was their first coach.
Several of the Highstepper team members who were with the group in 1969/70 have indicated they will be participating in the band reunion scheduled for October 16-17.
