Huntington School Board Notes
Huntington School Board members recently approved a pair of capital bids. Byrne & Son won the bid for an irrigation system for the Washington Primary School athletic field (which is used by high school sports teams) in the amount of $49,717.50. American Securities Technologies earned a bid in the amount of $45,813 for a new fire alarm system at Southdown Primary School.
Trustees accepted the resignation of Amy Araya, a Washington Primary School ESL teacher, who moved to Geneva, Switzerland the day after the school year ended. Mrs. Araya, who worked in the district for seven years, moved with her son and husband, who landed an exciting position with a music radio station there.
Trustees appointed Kenneth Card (director of adult education), Stephen Henry (physical education coordinator), Kelly Quintero (humanities coordinator/9-12), Brendan McGowan (humanities coordinator/7-8), Katie McCourt (special education coordinator), Georgia McCarthy (driver education coordinator), Jack Abrams (curator, School Heritage Museum), Frank Conforti (energy manager), Al White (property control manager), Joan Sheedy (purchasing agent), Marta Smith (translator) and Greenkill trip advisors Keith Meyers and Allison Von Vange to part-time positions.
Trustees also took the following actions:
- Awarded bids for various printed forms and cards to A to Z Printing ($1,055.84), Almat Forms & Systems ($506.20), American Business Forms, Inc. ($3.423.13) and Printers 3, Inc. ($3,045.38).
- Granted a leave of absence to Southdown/Jefferson School speech teacher Sarah Macaluso for child care related reasons.
- Awarded a bid for summer transportation services to Huntington Coach Corp.
- Appointed Donna Saviano (high school attendance office) and Linda Ciccotto (Flower Hill senior clerk typist) to clerical positions. They are replacing Patricia Delecce and Rachel Cermignani, respectively, who retired from their posts.
- Approved bid awards for integrated pest management (Bug Fighters - $6,144), electrical services (Cavanagh Electric, Inc. at a combined hourly rate of $115.65), telephone maintenance (Nu Vision Technologies D/B/A Black Box Network Services - $5,990), athletic field maintenance (Tri Turf, Inc. - $11,061) and vehicle repair (Tilden Huntington, Inc. with an hourly labor rate of $40 and a 10 percent discount from the list price for parts).
- Appointed Samantha White as a district-wide 12-month courier.
- Approved a consultant services contract with Robert Sanderl. He will provide music and drill instructor services at the Blue Devil marching band camp and will be paid $160 per diem for seven days between August 17 - 23.
- Approved part-time teaching appointments for Allison Collins (.6 English/Huntington High School), Gina Trigian Molvaut (.8 French/Finley Middle School), Stephon Sair (.9 physical education/Woodhull School), Linda Kohan (.6 social worker), Matthew Perlongo (.8 math/high school) and Robert Curtin (.6 Latin/high school and Finley).
- Awarded bids for custodial supplies to Essential Maintenance Corp., Emerald Island Corp., I Janvey, Bergo Supply Corp. and Interboro Packaging Corp.
- Approved long-term substitute teaching appointments for Jennifer Gulino (reading/Woodhull), Marie Ricobboni (English/Finley), Nancy Giorgios (reading/Washington), Jennifer Glatzer (ESL/Southdown and Flower Hill), Amanda Meyer (math/high school), Robert Grubel (compensatory math/Woodhull) and Amanda Shimkin (music/Woodhull).
- Approved bid awards for lumber supplies to Burt Lumber and Nassau-Suffolk Lumber and East Islip Lumber.
- Awarded bids for plumbing supplies to Plumb Perfect Supply and Blackman Plumbing.
- Awarded a bid for fruits and vegetables to Gargiulo Produce with a fixed dollar amount over wholesale market price of $3.95 and additional price per item for chopped or shredded fruits and/or produce of $2.95.
- Awarded a bid for refrigeration services to Technicold Refrigeration Consultants, LLC with a labor cost of $73.99 per hour, including hours after the regular work day.
- Awarded a bid for milk and dairy products to Oak Tree Farm Dairy.
- Awarded a bid for coffee dispenser machines to Colonial Coffee.
- Awarded a bid for maintenance and kitchen equipment to F.V. Stern & Sons, Inc. at a rate of $85 per hour.
- Awarded a bid for copy duplicator services to W.B. Mason in the amount of $42,441.42.
- Appointed Scott Armyn as dean of students at Jack Abrams Intermediate School for the 2009/10 school year.
- Authorized the disposal of an IBM typewriter, GE clothes dryer and five pieces of Dell computer equipment. Each of the items is beyond repair.
- Authorized the disposal of hundreds of obsolete corrective reading and math books.
- Authorized budget transfers to cover costs associated with the purchase of AP biology workbooks ($800), accounting workbooks ($300) and high school career internship advisors ($12,500).
- Approved Creative Tutoring, Syosset Tutoring, Islip Tutoring and Top Grade Tutoring as providers of home tutoring services for students who qualify.
