Huntington School Board Notes
Fran Johnnidis is retiring after a long career as an elementary school teacher. Huntington School Board members approved her request to call it a career, effective at the close of business on June 30. She is currently a sixth grade teacher at Woodhull Intermediate School.
At their last meeting, trustees also accepted the resignations of Finley Middle School teacher aide Cecelia Koomen and Southdown School clerk typist Wanda Gonzalez. Teachers Alice Pancir, Jill Lowe, Colleen Mahoney, Corinne D’Andrea and Christyn Roseto and teacher aides Juanita Turner and Daphine Harkins were approved for leaves of absence.
Trustees approved tenure recommendations for reading teachers Donna Marie O’Shaughnessy (Flower Hill) and Carly Cerulli (Finley), effective Feb. 15 and Feb. 14, respectively.
Heather Little was hired as a part-time music teacher at Washington and Jefferson schools and Dana Aboulafia (speech, Southdown/Jack Abrams School) and Virginia Stamatakis (ESL, Flower Hill/Woodhull) were both hired as long-term substitute teachers. Kristin Orsini was approved to work as a long-term substitute teacher assistant at Jefferson School.
Washington School speech teacher Patricia Klee and Flower Hill School classroom teacher Adrienne DiMaggio were approved to return from their respective leaves of absence, effective Sept. 1, 2009.
Retired school nurses Marlene McKenna, Rita Barry, Judy Maier and Patricia Forde were all hired to work on an hourly basis for four days each during the district’s annual kindergarten registration. Finley eachers Brendan McGowan, Kimberly Finneran and Thomas Tantillo were appointed to work in the community based literacy program there. They will be paid $47.07 per hour.
Trustees also approved numerous substitutes, including teachers Wanda Gonzalez, Dana Aboulafia, Heather Ciurleo, Christine McDonald, Pamela Dembinski, Ruth Guirguis, Miriam Engle, Sarah Salvo, Marilyn Maggio Mauren Malone and Andrea Cooper, clerical workers Marilyn Maggio, Elizabeth Lowry and Judith Weingold and teacher aides/monitors Marilynn Maggio, Elizabeth Lowry and Wanda Gonzalez. Substitute teachers are paid $90 per day. Subsitute clerical workers earn $10.50 per hour and substitute aides/monitors earn $8.75 per hour.
School Board members also took the following actions:
- Approved participating in a cooperative bid administered by Educational Data Services for the purchase of interactive whiteboards (Smart boards). The bid prices are effective until Oct. 31, 2009.
- Approved a bid for $49 related to the disposal of surplus equipment to S. Castillo.
- Approved budget transfers from one account to another to cover costs associated with conferences ($1,100), Woodhull School data team training sessions ($400) and high school copy machine paper ($11,110).
- Approved the disposal of a Dell Inspiron 3000 computer that is beyond repair.
- Appointed Carmen Kasper as administrator for the K-1 Saturday Academy for ELL Students for Pre-Literacy through ESL Methodology. Her $5,000 stipend will be covered by a Title III grant.
- Teachers Lauren Thomas, Jennifer Bruno, JoAnn Ferazi, Michael Graziano, Christopher Pelligrino and Irene Woll were all authorized to work in the after school RCT and Regents prep program. Their combined hours were limited to 212. They will be paid $47.07 for the hours they work.
- Joseph Cohen (science) and Amanda Meyer (math) were appointed to teach in the alternative high school program. They will be paid $51.19 per hour.
- Teachers Matthew Perlongo and Melanie were appointed to work in the Finley Middle School after school math program. There stipends of $47.07 per hour will be covered by a bilingual-ESL supplemental intervention grant.
- Paul Esposito and Michael Macolino were appointed as the School of Rock club advisors at Jack Abrams Intermediate School. Christine Barresi and Martha Reilly were appointed as the student government advisors at Woodhull Intermediate School.
- Tanya Robert was approved to work as an aide in the after school ELA and math program at Southdown School. She will be paid $18.75 per hour.
- Appointed Finley Middle School club advisors Sharon Holly (school store), Erica Murphy (school store), Matthew Perlongo (honor society), Kimberly Finneran (honor society), Elizabeth Grobe (Math Counts), Cathy Cain (community club), Julie Wright (stage crew) and Susan Hahn (97 percent drama director) and Akira Byng (three percent drama director).
- Appointed Michael Marchena as the winter color guard advisor.
