Blue Devil Winter Sports Participation Higher

More students are participating in the athletic program this winter at Huntington High School than were last year at this time, according to a report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy.

There are 246 students split among 11 teams. The girls’ fencing team has a roster of 36. There are 34 athletes on the wrestling, boys’ swimming and boys’ and girls’ winter track teams. The boys’ fencing squad consists of 21 members. JV boys’ basketball has 16 players and boys’ varsity basketball team features a roster of 14. The girls’ varsity and junior varsity basketball teams have 10 and 13 players, respectively.

The participants include 153 boys and 93 girls. Last winter there were 224 high school students participating on 12 teams. In 2007/08 there were 243 athletes on 13 teams. (The JV cheerleading squad was eliminated for the 2008/09 school year as a result of budget cutbacks and varsity cheerleading was cut for this year.)

“We are all pleased to see so many of our students choosing to participate in our athletic program,” Assistant Superintendent Joseph Giani said.
