No Championship but Progress on Tennis Courts
It wasn’t a championship season but the Huntington High School varsity girls’ tennis team was competitive this past fall, finishing with a 6-6 overall record.
Captained by Sara Lustberg and Karly Kocis, the squad was coach by physical education teacher Jamie Fishlow. Lustberg, Kocis and Alexandra Ottas earned All-League honors.
Lustberg played No. 1 singles and Ottas was entrenched in the No. 2 spot. Kocis split time in No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles. Freshman Olivia Ammirati held down the No. 3 singles slot, compiling a fine 9-3 mark.
“Despite our youth and inexperience, we hung on for a tie for second in the league,” Fishlow said. “This is our best finish in quite a few years. We were very young with a lot of potential. The lack of experience showed at times. The seniors did a nice job of leading the younger players.”
With just three Blue Devils graduating next June, Huntington will return most of its team in 2010. “The sky is the limit,” said Fishlow about the team’s future. “We will be in the same league and we are looking to improve at all positions. If the girls commit to play in the off-season, it will help.”
Net Notes: “I have offered all players the opportunity to work with me after school,” said Fishlow about his efforts to improve the team’s level of play . . . The coach is considering organizing an elementary school clinic in the spring . . . Fishlow said next years goals are to “develop talent” . . . “Recruit more players” . . . “Be more competitive and make the play-offs.”
