McCourt and Greenhill Honored at Suffolk Zone Dinner

Seniors Meredith McCourt and Ryan Greenhill are two of Huntington High School’s best student-athletes. Their achievement in the world of physical education is well-documented as is their solid academic performance, fine character and willingness to lead.

The pair was honored last week by the Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance during an upbeat dinner at the East Wind Caterers in Wading River.

“Meredith and Ryan are wonderful role models for their classmates and have gained the respect of their teachers and fellow students,” said Georgia D. McCarthy, Huntington director of health, physical education and athletics. “They are leaders and accept all the responsibility that goes with it. They both deserve this special recognition.”

Ms. McCourt is wrapping up a superb four-year high school run. A member of the National Honor Society, she’s president of the Student Government, holds a 94 grade point average and has taken many of Huntington’s most difficult courses.

“While participating in physical education classes, Meredith always gives 100 percent and motivates her classmates to fully participate in the activities and enjoys what physical education has to offer both physically and socially,” Mrs. McCarthy said.

A member of the varsity soccer, basketball and track and field teams, Ms. McCourt has earned all-league honors. She played key roles in the soccer and basketball teams’ drives for the county finals. “She’ll be missed in our classrooms and on our athletic teams,” Mrs. McCarthy said.

Mr. Greenhill, who has chosen to lead by example, has played varsity lacrosse and earned all-division honors in volleyball the past two years. He’s excelled in so many areas of high school life, from notching top grades and participating in the drama club and the student newspaper to receiving academic awards and garnering the respect of classmates and teammates.

Huntington’s physical education teachers regard Mr. Greenhill as one of the program’s top students due to his tireless efforts and the manner in which he encourages and motivates other students. He’s considering playing lacrosse and/or volleyball at either Lynchburg or Roanoke College and possibly majoring in sports medicine or communications. “Ryan will be missed as a student-athlete here in Huntington,” Mrs. McCarthy said

The Suffolk Zone honors only one senior male and female student from each high school. To be eligible, students must have earned at least a 90 average in physical education class and a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average in all classes prior to the senior year, demonstrate outstanding character, show leadership skills in both physical education class and general school wide activities and serve as a role model for other students.

“We are very proud of these outstanding teenagers,” Mrs. McCarthy said. “They have been exceptional representatives of our district and community.”
