Huntington School Briefs

 

Washington Primary School librarian Georganne White is reminding parents that as the new school year approaches, Summer Reading Challenge summary sheets must be submitted by Sept. 18. The program packet is available by logging onto the Huntington School District’s website at www.hufsd.edu, clicking on the link “Our Schools”, then selecting Washington School and then “Forms and Files.”

 

“The PTA gives each summer reader a special gift and their names are displayed on an honor roll at the front of the school,” Ms. White said.


Long-Term Sub Hired

Christine Penza has been hired as a long-term substitute special education at Huntington High School. Trustees approved the appointment through approximately Oct. 16.

 

Ms. Penza graduated from SUNY Buffalo in June 1994 with a BA degree in history and obtained a BS degree at SUNY College at Old Westbury in Dec. 2004 in adolescent education. Prior to her present appointment, Ms. Penza work as a substitute teacher in the South Huntington (Mar. 2005 – Feb. 2007) and Huntington (Dec. 2004 – June 2008) school districts.

 

District officials reviewed 50 applications and interviewed five candidates before recommending Ms. Penza for the position.

 

Band Alumni Returning from Afar

Blue Devil marching band alumni are returning from afar to participate in the band’s 75th anniversary celebration, including rehearsing and then marching and playing as a group in the Homecoming Day parade on Saturday, Oct. 17.

 

Retired band director Linda Shoemaker said “the excitement has started to build” and band alumni “are starting to talk about who is coming.”

 

Well over 100 band alumni are expected to return to their alma mater for the festivities. “So many of them live so far away but we do have a couple coming from London and several from California and one from Alaska,” Ms. Shoemaker said.

Finley Club Advisors

Club advisors are in place at J. Taylor Finley Middle School for 2009/10. The group includes Mark Belton (art club), Dee Weinstock (AV club), Caterina Cain (community club), Matthew Perlongo (honor society), Melanie DeMarco (Mathletes-7), Denise Grodzicki (Mathletes-8), Kimberly Shiller (newspaper literary advisor), Erica Murphy (school store) and John Hlavaty.

 

Christopher Scarnato and Ayallah Jeddah will split duties as stage crew advisors. Kimberly Finneran and Frank Battista will be the student council advisors. Elizabeth Grobe and Ms. Grodzicki will direct the Math Counts club. Deborah Kim will serve as assistant director of the drama club. The drama club director post is not yet filled.

 

Athletic Supervisors

Huntington School Board members approved Ignatius Asaro, Joshua Baravarian, Christine Beck, Michael Byrnes, Shari Campbell, Krystle Canino, Maria Canino, Rose Canino, Steven Davis, James McCabe, Carol McGovern, Melissa Mock, John Mohlenhoff, Hugh Norton, Tara Reminick, Jon Searles and David Wilson to work as supervisors at athletic events, handling duties such as crowd control, scoreboard and clock operations, scoring, etc. They will be paid the contractual rate of $30.47 per hour when they are assigned to cover games and tournaments.

 

Substitutes Added to the Roster

As the Huntington School District ramps up for the new school year, trustees authorized the addition of several individuals to the list of approved per diem substitutes for employees away from their posts for sick days or on school business, etc.

 

The newly approved substitutes include teachers Dana Aboulafia, Catherine Alexander, Marissa Bergmann, Rocco Condoleo, Pamela Dembinski, Jacqueline Fox, Kathryn Hicks and Ellen Gross. They will be paid $90 per day when they work.

 

Chelsea Marotta and Carol Rae Brock were approved as substitute aides and clerical workers. A substitute aide is paid $8.75 per hour while clerical substitutes earn $10.50 per hour.
