The ballots have been counted and the election results have been announced at Jack Abrams Intermediate School. The 2008/09 Husky Student Leadership Organization officers will be: Nora Bucholtz (president), Emily Sager (secretary), Holly Loturco (treasurer), Alexandra Smith (4th grade vice-president), Sophia Latt (5th grade vice-president) and Lana Ziegler (6th grade vice-president).
Faculty members Scott Armyn and Paul Esposito will serve as HSLO’s co-advisors. “We are extremely proud of the nearly 100 students who ran for office in the primaries and general election,” Mr. Armyn said.
October is Fire Safety Month and the kindergarten and first grade students at Flower Hill Primary School were visited by the Halesite Fire Department. The volunteer firefighters brought with them a rescue truck, ambulance and full firefighter gear. The youngsters listened as it was explained how the truck operates at the scene of a fire and what to they should expect if a firefighter needs to visit their house.
Flower Hill students peppered the firefighters with thoughtful questions. At the end of the demonstration the children were given their own plastic helmets.
Huntington High School students Frances Saravia and Olivia Torres were honored by the Town of Huntington earlier this month at the annual Hispanic heritage celebration at Town Hall. The pair received awards from town and state officials for their many accomplishments.
Washington Primary School was busy last week constituting its shared decision-making team. The committee meets once-a-month for 45 minutes prior to the start of classes. “The primary purpose of the committee is to continue to improve the quality of education and the educational performance of the Washington Primary students,” according to a flyer distributed to members of the school community.
Jack Abrams Intermediate School students under the direction of art teacher Karen Morea are working on a craft project for a good cause. “The Studio Art club students, who volunteer one lunch/recess period a week to work on special projects, are helping to create centerpieces for a charity luncheon,” explained Scott Armyn, dean of students at the school.
“The Suffolk County Child Care Council is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for single mothers in need who can't afford child care and are looking to reenter the workforce,” Mr. Armyn said. “The Champions for Children luncheon is their major fund-raising event of the year. It will take place on October 17 at the Crest Hollow Country Club. The theme is "Halloween" and the children in Mrs. Morea's club are decorating artificial pumpkins for the centerpieces.”
Huntington School Board members appointed students Katherine Getz, Julia Sorto, Dylan Ferber, BoAshley Brindley and Alyssa Fennington to serve on the Huntington High School stage crew during the 2008/09 school year. They will be paid $7.15 per hour when they work.
Trustees appointed Jack Abrams Intermediate School teachers Allison VonVange (drama director) and Karen Morea (asst. drama director) to work in the extracurricular activities program.
Trustees have appointed Flower Hill Primary School after school support program (ELA and math) staff members including lead teacher Donna O’Shaughnessy, teachers Kimberly Murray, Suzanne Knoerzer and Veronica Quinn, substitute teacher Patricia Persichilli and teacher aides Kathleen Lavery, Veronica Velazquez and Kimberly Voyages.
The after school support program staff at Jefferson Primary School will include lead teacher Renee Troffa, teachers Eileen Wallace, Lucy Marotta and Karen Mallow-Rizzo, substitute teachers Allison Daly-Muradyan, Priya Mondkar and Tricia Martin and teacher aides Kimberly Schondebare, Vicki Peskin, Rosalia Alvarado and Janet Bellach.
At Southdown Primary School the after school support program staff will include lead teacher David Crimi, teachers Hildi Green, Sarah Metcalf and Jessie Brennan and teacher aides Carol Salerno and Miryam Palacio.
The after school support program staff at Washington Primary School will include lead teacher Kathryn Joseph, teachers Nancy Giorgos, Doreen Ellis and Peri Alfano and teacher aides Cindy Gooley, Yvonne DaCosta and Tyrone Alvarado.
St. Joseph’s Univ., Southern Vermont College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Sacred Heart Univ., Johnson & Wales Univ., Fordham Univ., Stonehill College, Lehigh Univ., Hofstra Univ., Quinnipiac Univ., SUY College at Delhi, Huston-Tillotson Univ. and the U.S. Marine Corps all paid recent visits to the Huntington High School college counseling center to meet with students and share information.
Virginia Johnson, a member of Huntington High School’s Class of 2008, is now attending Cornell University. While in high school she displayed skills in many areas, including as an equestrian, artist, cellist, swimmer, lacrosse player and even as a philanthropist. Teachers say she is insightful, confident, enthusiastic, humble, modest and peaceful.
The Huntington School District’s K-1 Saturday Academy program for English language learner students will debut on Oct. 18 and run through May 16. It is funded by a Title III grant. Teachers Kimberly Murray, Sarah Metcalf, Donnamarie O’Shaughnessy, Angela Berner and Nancy Giorgos will work with the participating students.
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School after school support program in literacy and literacy content areas will be serviced by lead teacher Denise DeChiaro and teachers Carly Cerulli, Carol Emmerman, Kimberly Finneran and John Hlavaty.
The Finley support program for English language learner students preparing for ELA and math state tests will be serviced by teachers Silvia Gilbert and Esmerelda Tello and teacher aide Pena Keane.
The Woodhull Intermediate School after school support program for English language learners preparing for the ELA, math and science state tests will be serviced by teachers Cinzia Reeves, Christine Amodeo, David Benjamin and Mary Grever.
The Woodhull after school support program for social studies, ELA and math will feature lead teacher Dianne Grassi, teachers Andrea Frisenda, Elaine McKeown, Christine Barresi, Jenny Finnegan-Strachovsky, Stephen Fritts and teacher aide Jacke Segredo.
At Jack Abrams Intermediate School, the after school support program staff will include lead teacher Allison VanVange, teachers Angela Berner, Carolyn Naldi, Mark Helstom, Heather Weinstein, substitute teacher Marie Lavery and teacher aide Cynthia Caleb.
The Jack Abrams Intermediate School ELL support program will include teachers Sarah Fardella, Heather Barfuss and Erin O’Leary.
At the request of Woodhull Intermediate School Principal Kenneth Card, Huntington School Board members approved a budget transfer from a workbook account to cover the cost of restoring the position of newspaper club advisor at the school.
