Huntington School Briefs

Once again, the Huntington School District is not participating in the Long Island High School for the Performing Arts.  Its absence from the program is due to the development of a tight budget in an effort to hold down property taxes.

David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services said that “for at least the past six years this school district has not participated” in the BOCES service agreement that would allow high school students to enroll in the program.

Districts are assessed $13,525 for each student enrolled in the half-day program and $34,805 register for a full-day.  “These costs currently receive BOCES aid at a level of approximately 50 percent, however, we do not see the aid until 15 months after the end of the fiscal year in which they are incurred,” Mr. Grackin said.

The Huntington High School College Counseling Center continues to see a steady stream of visitors from colleges, who are anxious to meet with students, explain their academic programs and answer questions.  Representatives from the Univ. of Richmond, Castleton State College, Univ. of Massachusetts at Amherst, Alfred Univ., College of Mount St. Vincent, Providence College, High Point Univ., George Mason Univ., SUNY College at Canton, Univ. of Maryland at College Park, Bridgewater College, Iona College, City Univ. of New York and Radford Univ. made recent stops.

Former Huntington School Board member and current district resident and parent Charles Forte has donated sealcoating and striping for the Flower Hill Primary School basketball court.  Trustees accepted the donation with gratitude.

The use of eBoards continues to grow in the Huntington School District.  There were 37 registered users on Sept. 1 and a month later that figure has reached 50.  “We are supporting these eBoard users through scheduled user group meetings as well as scheduled one on one instructional help sessions,” said Joann Kavanagh, coordinator of instructional technology.  “In addition, the Huntington Teacher Center is training an additional turn-key trainer and offering workshops after school.”

As of Sept. 5, the district’s eBoards experienced a combined total o 2,076 visits.  To access the eBoard line-up log onto the district’s website at www.hufsd.edu and select eBoards from the Quick Click Bar on the homepage.
