Trustees Approve Band Field Trip among Dozens of Actions
Here come the Blue Devils. At their meeting this past Monday night, Huntington School Board members approved an overnight field trip for the Huntington High School marching band to attend the New York State Field Band Conference Championship in Syracuse later this month.
Participants will depart on Sat. Oct. 25 at 6 a.m. and return on Mon. Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. About 120 students are expected to make the journey along with 13 staff members and a dozen other chaperones.
The trip will cost approximately $185 per student. Fundraising opportunities are being provided. Students have been rehearsing during their band period at the end of the school day as well as after school, at night and on weekends. The marching band is in the midst of its fall competitive schedule and the state championship serves as a culminating activity.
Trustees also authorized district participation in an inter-municipal bidding venture with the Town of Huntington for sand, grit, gravel and oversize stone, welding and plasma cutting services and soil boring and soil testing.
Trustees accepted the resignation of Leslie Sullivan, a teacher aide at Jack Abrams Intermediate School, effective Sept. 23. Ana Harris was hired to fill the position, effective Oct. 7. Huntington High School teacher aide Tania White was granted a leave of absence from Oct. 6 to Nov. 14.
Trustees also took the following actions:
- Awarded a bid for all district stationery (at various prices) and the printing of the J. Taylor Finley Middle School curriculum guide (800 copies for $495) to American Business Forms, Inc.
- Awarded a bid to Tobay Printing Co. to print the Huntington High School curriculum guide (1,500 copies for $2,969/1,800 copies for $2,989.)
- Approved the addition of teacher James Creighton and Huntington High School Principal Carmela Leonardi to the list of employees authorized to receive mileage reimbursement for job related travel.
- Authorized Martha Garland, Steven Widerman, Nicole Lynch, Susan Hahn, Karen Cronin, Melanie Feldman and Shari Cerini to work as piano accompanists on an as needed basis during the year at school concerts and productions. They will be paid at the rate of $24 per hour.
- Approved Thomas Monks to drive the marching band trailer to competition sites. He will be paid at the rate of $24 per hour.
- Hired Luke Mazzotta to work on the high school stage crew at the rate of $7.15 per hour.
- Approved long-term substitute teacher assignments for Scott Leonardi (Southdown School: Oct. 14 – Dec. 14/Jack Abrams School: Dec. 15 – June 30) and Denise Novello (Jefferson School: Nov. 14 – Nov. 26).
- Approved extra-duty assignments for Brian Stellato (high school wind ensemble), Lisa Leonardi (high school instrumental director, chamber orchestra, Tri-Music Honor Society), Steven Finch (high school musical vocal director, jazz choir), Jason Giachetti (high school jazz ensemble), Laura Ayala (Highstepper director), Ayallah Jeddah (co-advisor Art Honor Society), Kristin Singer (co-advisor Art Honor Society), Deborah Kim (Finley honor string ensemble, Tri-Music Honor Society), Josephine Rosado (Finley show choir), Christopher Scarnato (Finley jazz ensemble) and Frank Battista (Finley wind ensemble).
- Approved club advisors for Woodhull Intermediate School, including Todd Hiscox (art and drama), Keith Meyers (AV coordinator), Nicole Parrett (asst. drama), Martha Ironman (newspaper) and Christine Barresi (student government).
- Approved club advisors for Jack Abrams Intermediate School, including Scott Armyn (student government), Paul Esposito (student government) and Patricia Dillon (newspapers and AV coordinator).
- Authorized salary schedule changes for teachers Victoria Jimenez and Katherine Canales.
- Approved a change in the probationary period of Huntington High School bilingual science teacher Rosario Lorenzana from Oct. 6, 2008 – Oct. 6, 2010 to Sept. 23, 2008 – Sept. 23, 2010 at which time she will be eligible for tenure.
- Approved the addition of Michael Gerardi, Carolyn Sager, Melinda Roth, Philip Wayne, Jennifer Bamberger, Susan Mehring, Matthew Kahrs, Amanda Brown, Jeremy Donavan, Dan Holmes, Angela Stogianos, Stephanie Cartwright, Judith Knoerzer, Sheila Kearney, Kimberly Musgnug, Leslie Sullivan, Malgotzata Mitchell and Cathy Goodrich.
- Changed the hourly assignments of teacher aide Gina Tonno and food service workers Angela Amorison, Denise Valentin, Lucille Uvena, Helen Boccio, Olga Velasquez, Lina Flora and Laura Asaro.
- Appointed Karen Behrmam (Woodhull) and Joanne Guerrieri (Finley) as central treasurers of extra-activity accounts in their respective buildings.
- Approved alternative high school staff members, including program administrator Donna Nugent and teachers Angela Stogianos (English), Michael Graziano (math), Fred Bisogno (social studies), Jordan Gould (social studies), Anthony Troffa (social studies – spring), Jennifer Schnitzer (social studies – spring), Anna Fabela (science) and Craig McKee (science).
