Avalanche of Awards for Huntington Art Students
Spring arrived with a bang for Huntington High School art students who have been capturing awards at numerous Long Island contests and exhibits on an almost weekly basis. The art program at the school continues to be a source of community pride and the latest generation of art students follows a long line of talented individuals.
Teachers Heather Swan (video), Kasmira Mohanty (computer graphics) and Pam Piffard (photography) have each set high standards of creativity and professionalism in Huntington’s media program and students have responded in almost breathtaking fashion.
“The Huntington High School art program is consistently recognized for superior work,” said Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts.
At the Long Island Media Arts Show, a Huntington contingent was among 500 teenagers who entered work. In the photography category, a pair of coveted Best in Show Awards was earned by Maya Bengston and singular honors went to Matt West, Sam LoBue, Sarah Conte and Rebecca Lader.
In the computer graphics category, Huntington’s Marissa Rosenfeld, Ryan Loscalzo, Michelle Reiss and Lainie Trenor more than held their own, with Ms. Rosenfeld winning two Best in Show Awards.
Huntington shined in the video competition, too. Best in Show Awards were garnered for the public service announcements created by Amanda Plunkett (“Don’t Use Your Friends”) and Matt Fairbanks (“Domestic Violence Prevention”).
The Video 2 class project, “Roto-ball,” also won a Best in Show Award. Students who worked on the project include Jeff Green, Sebastian Norgaard, Amanda Plunkett, Dan Lobasso, Sean Colligan, Luke Reigot, Connor Pufahl and Jesse Kitzen.
At the Nassau Community College Honors Program Art Competition, Huntington participants Marissa Rosenfeld, Kay Lodge, Dan Rabinowitz, Johanna Clifford, Maya Bengston and Grace Kelly sparkled.
Ms. Lodge grabbed a Best in Show Award in photography. In the mixed media competition, Ms. Kelly earned an Award of Excellence and Ms. Rosenfeld received honorable mention recognition.
The Suffolk County Art League Association’s annual competition also provided a platform for Huntington students to win even more honors, which Dan King (second place) and George Mergille (third place) did in the computer graphics category. Also participating in the SCALA competition were Liz Mormile, Rachel Marsh, Molly Burnett and Ryan Hartley.
“We have a wonderful fine arts program and exceptional students and teachers,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.
